This tropical beauty created by husband-and-wife team Aaron Tang and Mavis Tan won first prize.

What happens when you open the fridge to make dinner… and discover you’ve got nothing to cook except 1 cup of rice and half a pineapple? Panic!

That was almost the story at the Simply Her Birthday Cooking Challenge. 10 pairs of amateur cooks had to whip up a three course meal in 90 minutes, watched by the crowd at the Asia-Pacific Food Expo.

The cooks knew they had to create a starter, main course and dessert, using top-of-the-line Electrolux gadgets plus Vitasoy’s Sprouted Tofu range, Mazola Corn Oil and Vitasoy Soya Bean Drink.

But at the last minute they were also given a fresh pineapple – which they suddenly had to use in at least one of their dishes.

The top prize went to husband-and-wife team Aaron Tang and Mavis Tan with their Sweet and Sour Tofu Balls. They tasted great, plus the dish was presented in show-stopping style in a pineapple Mavis carved to look like a bird. Get the full recipe here.

It’s astonishing – take another look at it in the video below.

Sisters Christine and Cindy Woo came in second with their Pumpkin Salted Egg Tofu, and Mango Soya Milk Cheese Cake. The third place went to husband-and-wife team Darwin Gosal and Ng Wei Chee, who whipped up Tofu Hors d’Oeuvres with Tofu Ricotta, and Rum & Raisin Chocolate Cremeux.
