Two on each side of the bed, resting against the bedhead, and two in front of them. Put the plumper ones at the front to create volume and select pillowcase covers in different colours and/or designs to enhance visual interest.
Layer them in a pyramid so there are more at the back, while the smallest cushions sit at the front. This makes the bed look well proportioned and really luxurious to sink into.

A mix of fabric such as linen, velvet, tassels and cotton is key to creating texture and interest.
