The royal wedding is barely months away, and while the world awaits to watch Meghan Markle and Prince Harry exchange their vows and say their “I do”s, one can only wonder which designer Meghan has picked to design her wedding gown. Usually, this honour is given to a British fashion label, with Sarah Burton at Alexander McQueen taking up the post the last time there was a royal wedding. It’s a bit of a reach here, but we’d like to see Meghan go for something a little less ordinary, and choose a conceptual piece from Christopher Kane. The British designer has a reputation for creating unique and visionary designs, and given that Meghan is a modern-day princess, maybe she’ll take a risk with Christopher.
The former Spice Girl is making a real name for herself in fashion, with leading industry figures often spotted at her fashion shows. Her vision for her woman? A strong, powerful character who is unafraid to lead the pack. Sound familiar?
Traditionally, the royal wedding serves as a platform for British designers to hone their craft. But given that Meghan is an American, we wouldn’t put it past her to work with an American brand. Known for creating show-stopping gowns, Marchesa is an easy bet if Meghan wants something that’s feminine and dramatic.
Yes, we know it’s a high street brand, but Meghan’s style has always been a little more democratic. Plus, she’s got an affinity for wearing a suit on the red carpet, so maybe she might choose an affordable brand to work with for her wedding!
Since she’s taken over the reins of the house, Sarah Burton has injected fresh, feminine energy into the brand. Having already cut her teeth with the iconic dress she designed for Kate Middleton’s wedding, we wouldn’t be surprised if she were to take on the duties of making the royal wedding dress for Meghan.
Only recently catapulted into public knowledge thanks to his collaboration with H&M, Erdem Moralioglu has already dressed the Duchess of Cambridge several times. He’s also a hot favourite for celebs who want exquisitely-designed dresses best suited for red-carpet appearances. Maybe the royal bride-to-be will want something that resembles queenly attire.
Known for her girlish tendencies, Simone Rocha’s work could prove too coquettish for Meghan’s liking. Then again, you just never know if Meghan might surprise us here. After all, if few would hesitate to tweak their designs, if they were given the chance to design a royal wedding gown.
Another brand from the US, the house of Oscar de la Renta is commonly associated with society dresses and glamorous embellishments. Since the passing of the house’s founder, the design team is now led by Fernando Garcia and Laura Kim. The duo have successfully injected a youthful sense of fun and fearlessness back into the label, and this could be something that might resonate well with Meghan.
If this name sounds familiar, it’s probably because Meghan has already worn one of their dresses for her engagement photos. As the first British label to be invited to show at Haute Couture fashion week (a privilege reserved for a small handful of French and Italian houses), Ralph & Russo have a good chance of being picked as the dress designers.
