8 of the Best Concealers That Hide Pimples and Blemishes - Featured

Your skincare routine for late nights

Whether you’re binge-watching your favourite TV show, attending company parties or going on a red-eye flight, odds are, your skin’s gonna have tell-tale signs of fatigue.

Aside from the usual symptoms associated with an alcohol hangover like body aches, dehydration and headaches, staying out all night also means you’ve probably had makeup on your face for more hours than it is accustomed to.

All that combined with hydration loss and the (probably) terrible food you indulged in the night before, and your body is going to be in need of quite the boost the morning after.

While drinking lots of water, eating a wholesome breakfast, and getting yourself nice and clean with a cool shower can do wonders for how you feel, we’ve got some rather specific skincare recommendations for dealing with how you look.

Of course, to give your skin its best chance, try as hard as you can to thoroughly cleanse your face before you hit the sheets. Sleeping in your day-old makeup is only going to clog your pores and give you skin issues you don’t need or want.

Estee Lauder Advanced Night Repair Synchronized Recovery Complex II, $114 for 30ml

The night before: Estee Lauder Advanced Night Repair Synchronized Recovery Complex II, $114 for 30ml

This is one of my favourite SOS skincare products and somewhat of an old-but-gold choice (the iconic serum was reformulated a couple of years ago). I love that this serum is oil-free and extremely lightweight, yet hydrating enough that I feel comfortable using it without topping up with any other skincare products at night.

On top of it being non-acnegenic (read: does not clog pores), I’ve also found that it minimises the appearance of my pores and evens out my slightly blotchy skin tone.

This reparative serum does wonders overnight, so I always use it before bed if my skin is feeling particularly finicky.

Hada Labo SHA Hydrating Cream, $35.90

The Night Before: Hada Labo SHA Hydrating Cream, $35.90

This cream is really soft and deceptively lightweight, because it really does give your skin a pretty intense hydration boost. It contains a so-called A.C.E Boosting Capsule formula, which are the tiny yellow beads in the cream.

The beads are actually made up of vitamins A, C, and E, and melt into the skin once you massage the cream in. The vitamin combo is really good for brightening and hydrating the skin while improving its elasticity and providing antioxidant protection as well!

On top of that, the cream has four types of hyaluronic acid to really lock in the moisture within the different layers of the skin. The cream feels luxurious, very moisturising, and not too heavy, which is important in our climate. Plus, it’s affordable!

Origins Ginzing Refreshing Scrub Cleanser, $38

The morning after: Origins Ginzing Refreshing Scrub Cleanser, $38

If you’re hoping to slough off dead skin and feel incredibly energised at the same time, this Ginzing scrub from Origins packs quite the punch. It doesn’t dry out my skin, and smells amazing with just the right kick to get you feeling more alert in the morning (it’s actually a blend of grapefruit, lemon, and spearmint essential oils)!

The cleanser is fortified with radiance-boosting panax ginseng and caffeine, and contains beads made from jojoba and carnauba wax to gently exfoliate and unclog your pores. You don’t have to worry about the scrub being too harsh because the beads are really quite gentle, which means you can even use this more regularly than a more gritty scrub.

Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Concentrate, $80

The night before: Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Concentrate, $80

This cult favourite is a good product to add to your regime: It’s light enough to be used on young skin and can be applied every evening before bed.

If you’re into reading your labels, this is paraben-free and  boasts evening primrose oil, omega 6 fatty acids and lavender essential oil, with 99.8 per cent of its ingredients being of natural origin. We can attest that just a couple of drops will leave skin feeling soft and supple in the morning.

Over time, this serum promises to stave off early signs of ageing by boosting radiance. This product can help even out skin tone and quench dehydrated skin too, so it is a good option for those who are just starting to consider anti-ageing protection or need a quick overnight boost.

Clarins Extra-Firming Mask, $105

The morning after: Clarins Extra-Firming Mask, $105

A quality face mask is going to do a lot more for your skin in a short amount of time than your regular moisturisers or serums can. If firmer skin is something you’re after, then a face mask like this Extra-Firming Mask from Clarins is going to help with your skin’s elasticity and firmness.

It’s packed with ingredients like palmitoyl glycine to smooth the appearance of tension lines (and who doesn’t have those given how rough 2016 has been?), and green banana and lemon thyme plant extracts that promise to improve the firmness and elasticity of your skin.

The product itself also boasts a really pretty purple hue – which may be intentional given how said colour is supposed to be relaxing – so you’re going to feel good mentally as well as physically while slapping this on your skin. The mask is also going to feel particularly refreshing once applied, with its soothing fragrance further aiding your relaxation.

So even if you haven’t gotten the recommended seven or eight hours of sleep, this mask is going to try and make you look and feel like you’re well and truly rested.

Skinceuticals Phyto Corrective Masque, $98

The morning after:Skinceuticals Phyto Corrective Masque, $98

If your skin is feeling particularly dry and inflamed, then you need something that’s going to cool and soothe the skin, instead of something too active that might not suit sensitive skin.

This mask from Skinceuticals is packed with botanical extracts, a calming dipeptide, and hyaluronic acid to give your skin a rather intense boost of hydration while soothing and inflammation.

The mask cools your skin the moment it’s applied, and works to calm red or overly sensitive skin. You’re meant to be left with smoother, more radiant skin that’s free from discomfort.

Too Faced Hangover Primer, $49

The morning after: Too Faced Hangover Primer, $49

If you must go out with makeup the next day, consider more lightweight formulas to let your skin breathe, and prep your skin with something that’s going to boost your skin’s hydration levels.

This primer from Too Faced is quite frankly the product that inspired this story. It’s silicone-free, which is important for letting your skin breathe, and also contains coconut water, a probiotic-based ingredient, and skin revivers which work to make your skin look firmer, more radiant and moisturised. Think of it as a much needed isotonic drink for your parched skin!
