Technology is a double-edged sword that enables us to work on-the-go, anytime, anywhere. While this facilitates convenience, many of us subconsciously allow work to permeate our personal lives so deeply that we find ourselves in situations where we’re physically present, but mentally absent.
“A career in the Sciences is demanding, but I feel that it’s also simultaneously less rigid than some other industries, because my lab time is flexible,” shares Dr Sherry Aw, who completed her doctoral research at Harvard University.
“My husband works in the Sciences as well, so we’ve developed a mutual understanding, and take turns to carry out our parenting duties as a team. At the end of the day, that’s what parenting is about: teamwork.”
A mum-of-two who deftly juggles the everyday responsibilities that many working mums face, Dr Sherry shares how she keeps herself “present” whenever she’s with her family:
