Crown Prince Naruhito is the elder son of Japan’s Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko.
During a tea session with the Duchess of Lugo, Infanta Elena, Naruhito met his wife-to-be, Masako Owada.
Naruhito fell head over heels for her and the couple soon started dating. Prior to their wedding, Naruhito had to propose to Masako three times and eventually won her over.
The couple wed in 1993 and have one daughter, Princess Aiko.
During a dinner organised by his sister, Princess Aisha, King Abdullah II met Rania Al-Yassin in August 1992.
After six months of dating, the couple announced their engagement and were married in June of 1993. Their whirlwind romance may have caused some doubts about their marriage initially but they’ve since gone from strength to strength. The couple has four children together, Crown Prince Hussein, Princess Iman, Princess Salma and Prince Hashem.
Grand Duke Henri met Maria Teresa while studying in Geneva. The two studied political science and hit it off immediately.
They eventually married in February of 1981. The couple has five children together.
The second longest-reigning monarch married Silvia Sommerlath in 1976.
The pair met during the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, Germany. Prior to her marriage with King Gustaf, Silvia was an interpreter and briefly worked as a flight attendant.
Impressively, Swedish is Silvia’s sixth language. She’s also able to sign in Swedish sign language.
King Harald met commoner Sonja Haraldsen when they were in their early 20s and dated for nine years before getting engaged.
The couple had to keep their relationship a secret as Sonja was a commoner. When his family initially did not approve of their relationship, Harald threatened not to get married at all. This could have ended the line of succession for the Norwegian royals. As such, his father agreed to allow them to marry in 1968.
Queen Margrethe of Denmark married French diplomat Henri Marie Jean in 1967. Henri’s name was Danicised to Henrik to honour his marriage with Margrethe.
Despite their long marriage, the couple has met with ups and downs. Mostly due to Henrik’s unhappiness as being of a lower status level than his wife.
In August of 2017. Henrik announced that he did not want to be buried with his wife in the Roskilde Cathedral where most Danish royals have been buried.
Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko met on a tennis court in Karuizawa in 1957. The two began dating with the blessing of the Imperial Household Council despite how Michiko was initially regarded as a commoner. In 1958, the couple announced their engagement.
However, not everything was easy for the couple. Emperor Akihito’s mother fervently disapproved of the relationship and would often accuse Michiko of not being good enough for her son.
The United Kingdom’s beloved Queen Elizabeth II met and fell in love with Prince Philip at the age of 13.
Since then, the couple dated and only got engaged when she turned 21. On their wedding day, the couple received over 2,500 wedding gifts from around the world.
They have two children: Prince Charles and Princess Anne.
When Prince Albert II of Belgium went to the Vatican to witness the coronation of Pope John XXIII, he did not expect to meet the love of his life there.
Two months after meeting commoner Donna Paola Ruffo, Prince Albert proposed and introduced his family, friends and even the press to his future wife.
The couple married in 1959 and have three children together.
