Born and bred in Singapore, Rachel’s debut novel, Suicide Club, was published by Sceptre, Hachette (UK) and Henry Holt, Macmillan (US) in July 2018. Suicide Club was named the most anticipated book of the summer by a slew of international publications, and will be translated into eight languages worldwide. Rachel has also been the recipient of grants and fellowships from the Fine Arts Work Center, the National Arts Council of Singapore and the Michener Center for Writers.

A mother and founder of her own counselling practice, The Safe Harbour, Cassandra became visually impaired at the age of eight due to an inherited degenerative eye condition called Stargardt disease. Known for being one of the first guide dog owners in Singapore, Cassandra was a client services manager for the Guide Dogs Association of the Blind (GDAB), helping to foster a wider acceptance of guide dogs among businesses and public places. Her passion for life did not diminish with the loss of her sight and Cassandra now spreads that message of empowerment amongst her clients at The Safe Harbour, a counselling centre that serves to guide folks in conquering their personal demons.

Rujia is a Nurse Clinician at Tan Tock Seng Hospital where she helped to present the framework for transitional care in the community. Recognised as an Extraordinary Healthcare Worker at the 2018 Healthcare Humanity Awards, Rujia often goes beyond her care of duty to care for the underprivileged and elderly. During her free time, she often delivers food to needy families, and is an active voice for those in need and holds leaderships roles in The Frontier Community Club’s Women’s Executive Committee (WEC), as well as the Women Integrated Network (WIN).
Co-Founder of Freedom Cups

As a solution surrounding menstruation taboos, Vanessa along with her two sisters, co-founded Freedom Cups, a social start-up that provides women in underprivileged communities with menstrual cups. Designed after a “buy one, give one” model, Freedom Cups are made of medical-grade silicon and can be reused for up to 12 hours each time. Each cup lasts up to 15 years, making it a more economical and eco-friendly option. Aside from the sisters making it to last year’s Forbes ‘30 Under 30’ Asia list, Vanessa won the Commonwealth Youth Award for Asia this April.

Judith, a mum-of-three decided to bring physical intensive therapy to Singapore after her son was diagnosed with quadriplegic cerebral palsy, epilepsy, global developmental delay, and congenital cataracts. After years of pursuing treatments abroad, she found hope in the Therasuit Method. She founded Wings Therapy & Learning Centre earlier this year so that other children with brain injuries could benefit from similar therapies. Judith says the centre is her dream come to life, “a place of hope at home in sunny Singapore that provides children and young adults with cutting-edge treatments and therapies.”
Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) Pilot, Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF)

MAJ Sylvia made aviation history when she became the first female Unmanned Aerial Vehicle pilot in Singapore. She enlisted in 2002 and is currently a UAV Chief instructor in Air Force Training Command, where her role is to train selected officer cadets to become UAV pilots through stringent qualification for the operational squadrons for peacetime operations. She has also participated in several overseas exercises such as Exercise FORGING SABRE, which is an SAF integrated strike exercise involving assets from the RSAF and Army.

A chemical engineering graduate who jokes about being a “tech idiot”, Charlotte founded JobTech with the goal of using technology to solve the problem of unemployment. An artificial intelligence and big data analytics engine, JobTech tracks thousands of postings every day to provide efficient job matching unique to an individual’s career profile. In short, JobTech reduces the time and costs it takes to hire a viable candidate by generating a shortlist of talents for multiple positions across many sectors. Within eight months, it accumulated a database of about 3,500 users.

During her postdoctoral training, Sherry developed an interest in understanding the pathophysiology of neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. With rising concerns among Singapore’s ageing society about these diseases, Sherry uses genetics, molecular and imaging techniques to find the causes and potential treatment for these diseases. Additionally, Sherry is a co-inventor on two patents and was awarded the L’Oréal-UNESCO Singapore For Women in Science National Fellowship in Life Sciences last year.

Dr Eliza engineers liver tumours and tests anti-cancer drugs on them to allow scientists to narrow down which medicines are most effective at combating one of Singapore’s deadliest diseases. Having read Biomedical Engineering at the National University of Singapore, she then completed her PhD at Rice University in Houston, Texas where she turned her attention to the sub-field of tissue engineering. Her ten-year research into liver cancer in particular has grown from strength to strength and ultimately, Dr Eliza hopes to develop a more direct approach to cancer treatment where therapies are specifically tailored to benefit patients.

The first female Director of Singapore Space and Technology Association, Lynette takes pleasure in pushing boundaries, especially in expanding what humans can achieve. Having enjoyed the sciences from a young age, her passion for Earth’s final frontier was fuelled by her studies in the United States, where she pursued a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering as well as a Masters in the same field at Stanford University. Through her work in developing Singapore’s space technology industry with the SSTA, Lynette hopes to continue promoting women’s interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
