The assorted Peranakan snacks are not new but it’s worth a shout out to remind Singaporeans that heritage foods can vanish if we don’t preserve their authentic recipes. It’s also to remind us that the technicolour trend didn’t start with rainbow cakes. Chomp into the Godfather – the multi-coloured layered kueh lapis that’s been enjoyed for more than a century.

Glutinous Yellow Rice Cake
Who would expect this little shop selling traditional Malay-Indonesian lemper glutinous rice cakes to be such a hit when it opened not long ago? Unfold the delicate green banana leaf to reveal a small block of glutinous rice tucked with spiced beef or chicken. Or go regal with a hefty cake-shaped version coloured with turmeric and slice it into wedges for a special occasion.

Xiao Long Bao
Who could forget the Paradise group when they pretiffied old Shanghainese soupy meat dumplings shocking the culinary world here with brave flavours years ago? Like a palette presented in a bamboo steamer, the differently coloured dumplings are emboldened with flavours of ginseng herb, foie gras, black truffle, crab roe, cheese, garlic, and Szechuan spices.

Batik Swiss Rolls
Inspired by the ancient Javanese art, these rolls sold like hot cakes last Hari Raya. The bold Batik motifs that flow from the traditional to the abstract should impress any artist. You can choose the filling inside from a selection of six that include vanilla, blueberry, buttercream, and Nutella. Prices range from $26 to $28.
