In town to launch her namesake beauty label at Sephora Singapore is Kat Von D. You might know her as the edgy tattoo artist on Miami Ink and LA Ink, but this fiesty female is more than just a pretty face of Kat Von D Beauty.
#1 She got flak for developing a concealer which covers up tattoos
“I got a lot of flak from tattoo artist friends for launching the Lock-It Tattoo Concealer, and they were like, ‘why would you do that?’. I feel that if you have the ability to get tattoos, you should also have the option [of not having them when you want to]. I have make-up artist friends and I asked them what’s the most popular request from customers and they said that it was to cover up tattoos… whether it’s for a wedding or job interview or you don’t want your parents to think that you’re in a gang.”
#2 She wouldn’t tattoo make-up on
“I urge people not to. The beauty about makeup is that it’s ever changing. Eyebrows alone have changed so much [through the ages, you don’t want to look dated]. [I’ve been tattoo-ing for two decades,] and it took me least 10 years to really master tattooing to a certain degree. [What] it takes for someone to get a license in cosmetology tattooing is just two week, and that’s a lot of trust to have a tattoo needle go so near your eyeball, [there are people with a lot of experience though], so if you decide to do it, make sure you do your research.”
#3 She’s really proud of her brand
“I never in a million years dreamed that I’ll get my own make-up line. I think that what i love most about it is that there’s not one aspect of it that i’m not proud of. It takes nothing to just take a name and [just slap on products], for me I have no interest in doing that. I want to make things that I’m proud of, like I’ll look at it and say, ‘ That’s my baby.’ I think we should all be proud of the things we do on a daily basis.”
#4 She wants us to treat Kat Von D Beauty products like Pokemon
When asked what are her favourite products in her line, Kat replies that she really loves the Tattoo Liner, Studded Kiss Lipstick and Contouring palette. “It’s just never ending, I’d say ‘collect them all’.”
#5 She doesn’t like to be labelled an “artist”
“For me, I had a hard time with the term ‘art’ or ‘artisty’, I think [being able to tattoo] is an asterix on a long list of things that i am able to do or I am known for. When I first released my make-up line, my intention was that [it] could stand alone without me. You don’t have to know me or even like me to love the products and I think we’ve been really successful with that.I have such a high degree of respect for [people well-versed with make-up artisty], people who practice and dedicate their whole life to that.”
Kan Von D Beauty will be exclusively available in Sephora Singapore from July 2016 onwards.
