Beauty Dictionary: Z for Zinc Oxide

Zinc may not be the first thing you talk about when it comes to beauty or health, but zinc is present in every single cell in our body. While zinc is a naturally-forming mineral, zinc oxide is created by chemically heating zinc and combining it with oxygen molecules. Zinc oxide is known to help treat acne and a very effective ingredient in sunscreens. It is most commonly found in sunscreens, make-ups and balms.

Zinc oxide’s non-allergenic and non-comedogenic (does not clog pores) qualities work hand-in-hand when used in sunscreens as it prevents an acne breakout resulting from clogged pores. Zinc oxide is widely available either as part of a beauty product or as a zinc oxide cream. Zinc oxide cream can either be put on individual pimples or all over the fact to counter a breakout. Other beauty products that contain zinc oxide include BB creams, foundations and moisturisers that contain SPF.
