By now, we’re pretty much aware of how blueberries are considered a super food and have a myriad of health benefits. Recent studies have shown that the humble berry might also have the abilities to improve cognitive functions, enhance memory and even help slow the onset of Alzheimer’s!
Researchers found that when blueberries — given freeze-dried and throughout the course of 16 weeks — were consumed by 47 adults aged 68 and above, who already had mild cognitive impairment, showed signs of better memory. What’s even more impressive is that magnetic resonance imaging scans too showed that there was an increased in each subject’s brain activity.
The research, done by Dr Robert Krikorian of the University of Cincinnati has found that anthocyanins, a flavonoid that gives bluberries their colour, acts as an antioxidant to prevent age-related problems such as macular degeneration and prevent bladder infections.
Another discovery that Dr Krikorian and his team found was that blueberries tend to help those with more severe cognitive problems than those with milder problems. In a second study conducted with 94 people separated into groups, all of whom have claimed to have minor memory problems, the results proved inconclusive.
Besides chomping on these beneficial berries, here is another way you can include them in your diet, through cold-pressed juicing!
