The official recommendation is that women should aim to drink 2.1 L, or eight glasses, of fluid every day. But 700 to 800 ml of that will be taken care of by the water content of the food you eat, so you’re already down to drinking about five glasses of fluid a day. Also, the five glasses don’t have to be water. Milk, fruit juice and even some caffeinated drinks, such coffee and tea, contribute a certain amount of water to your daily intake.
But plain water is the best choice for staying hydrated because it’s free of calories, sugar and fat. The best way to stay hydrated is to drink enough fluid so that you hardly ever feel thirsty. If your urine is usually a light yellow colour, you’re probably drinking enough. Be aware that you’ll probably need to drink more when the weather’s hot or after a strenuous exercise session.
