Despite being time-consuming, it’s important to wash your make-up brushes so that that bacteria doesn’t grow on them. Think about how these will transfer onto your makeup and your face (yikes!), or worse, cause blemishes and breakouts.
Here are some things you should take note of when washing your make-up brushes:
#1 Do not soak your brushes
Avoid using the same cleaning logic as you would with dirty dishes and never soak your makeup brushes. Moisture might get into the ferrule (or the metallic part of the brush which holds the bristles) and cause the glue from loosening.
#2 Use a gentle brush cleaner
Harsh chemicals would ruin the bristles (especially the ones made of natural hair), but if you’re not ready to shell out good money for dedicated brush cleaning solutions, baby shampoo diluted with water works as well.
#3 Get help with tools and gadgets
If you enjoy manual labour, then swirling your brushes in soapy liquid for 20 minutes should be right up your alley. For the rest of you, there’s the Sigma Beauty 2X Sigma Spa Brush Cleaning Glove (S$55) which has different textures for cleaning various types of brushes.
For those strapped for time, there’s also StylPro, a brush cleaning gadget which not only washes, but dries your brushes as well.
#4 Dry them properly
Try not to stand your brushes upright when drying them, as the water might seep into the ferrule. Instead, rest them flat on a clean towel or paper towels to dry overnight. Never ever user a hair dryer on them as heat would damage synthetic bristles and also cause the glue holding it together to loosen.
