In the Land of the Rising Sun exists a lipstick that has a reputation that’s part-urban myth and part-genius marketing.

The Estee Lauder Pure Colour Crystal Sheer Lipstick has earned itself a cult name of “marriage lipstick”, and legend is, wearing this lipstick will get you hitched within a year.

The lipstick comes in 19 shades, including three limited edition colours and the most popular shades are 01 Crystal Baby Cream, 29 Demure Rose Sheer and  54 Passion Fruits Sheer.

The lipstick itself is pretty sheer, lending lips a translucent colour that is also very hydrating. They also offer a free engraving service, which makes for a great gift for close friends. This lipstick is also exclusively available in Japan and is priced at ¥ 3,996 (including taxes) a pop.

But don’t take our word for it though, from the reviews that are available on the website (and the powers of Google-translate), we found some that may very well have experienced the powers of the “marriage lipstick” for themselves.

さっそく買いました 笑。
I’m around 40 and am hoping to get married. I’ve had to invest a lot in clothes and makeup.  I read Megumi Kanzaki’s book and it said that this lipstick had the highest success rate of people getting married. Of course I bought it. So now I’ve been on 6 dates with a guy I met at a party who is 17 years younger than I am.  I wonder how things will turn out with him. Hopefully I’ll have something good to report. Thank you for this great product.

Today, I wore the shade 01 on a date. I was able to use it with confidence, even though I skeptical about the existence of a magical lipstick that makes women cute and beautiful. I really enjoyed myself on the date and it seems that he was really happy as well, and bought me a necklace on our first date.  ♪ I was glad to buy it. Thank you very much.
The way we look at it, it’s just finding the ideal lipstick that gives you confidence, but if this type of urban myth is your thing, there’s no harm picking up on when you visit Japan, or as a gift for your closed ones.
