#1 Cut down on sugar
We’re not jumping on the anti-sugar bandwagon, but there’s a reason why you should cut down on sugar. When there is too much sugar in the blood, it reacts with the proteins and peptides in the body, causing a reaction called glycation, which is the hardening of collagen fibres. When collagen fibres are hard and rigid, they’re less malleable and prone to breakages, leading to the formation of lines and wrinkles.

#2 Get serious about sun protection
In case you haven’t noticed, we are really big on sun protection, and there’s a good reason for it – UV damage is the biggest cause for premature skin ageing. Line, wrinkles, dehydration, pigmentation and discolouration are all linked to sun damage. In a study conducted by Queensland Institute of Medical Research found that a group of subjects had no detectable changes in their skin after four years when they diligently applied a sunscreen with SPF 15 to their skin daily. Imagine what it can do for your skin if you started applying sunscreen religiously?

#3 Ditch the shimmer
We know, we know, Christmas is right around the corner and there’s no harm in wanting to pile on the sparkles but beware where you apply them though. A little on the eye area to jazz up the look never hurts, but be mindful when you’re applying shimmery blusher or highlighters. They often settle into the lines and make them look more prominent. That said, you don’t have to give up shimmer completely, just use them sparingly, and remember to use a primer to smooth out fine lines before applying makeup.

#4 Pump up the volume
As you age, there is considerable loss in volume, especially around the lip and mouth area. Work in skincare products that contains high concentration of antioxidants to reduce free radical damage. In addition to that, products which stimulate collagen growth, or supplements which replaces lost collagen will do well in keeping lines at bay. Remember: It’s anti-ageing, you’re not trying to reverse the clock here.

#5 Meditate
Meditation has many known benefits – one of them is the lowering of the stress hormone, cortisol. While the presence of cortisol isn’t all bad, too much of it over a long stretch of time can lead to skin related problems like psoriasis and thinning skin. Skin naturally thins as you age, so you definitely don’t want to speed things up with stress. Just a few minutes a day of mindful breathing and meditating can help bring those cortisol levels in check.
