MYTH 1: Acne only happens to teenagers.
The biggest myth about acne is that it is something you “outgrow” because, after all, it only affects teenagers, right? Wrong. Nothing can be further from the truth.
What causes acne is no different in adulthood. Excess oil and the bacteria (Propionibacterium acnes) are to blame. Even hormonal changes that are brought on by your monthly period can result in overproduction of sebum, resulting in those unwanted pimples.
MYTH 2: Acne is caused by dirty skin.
It is not dirt that causes acne, but the activity of the oil-producing gland. When hormone levels are off-kilter, the gland produces even more oil. As your pores trap the oil, the bacteria multiply, resulting in acne.
Of course, keeping your skin well cleansed helps to remove dirt and dead skin cells, but acne itself is not caused by having unclean skin. In fact, over-cleansing can result in drying out your skin which, ironically, leads to overproduction of oil and the growth of even more pimples.
MYTH 3: Acne-prone skin does not need to be moisturised.
Contrary to popular belief, excess oil does not equate to sufficient hydration. For good health, your skin needs adequate hydration to maintain the integrity of its barrier function.
That is why it is vital to follow a regular skincare regimen that includes cleansing, moisturising and an anti-blemish action to help calm inflammation and reduce spot formation.
Pick The Right Product
If you have acne-prone skin, choosing the right products matters. Select a cleanser that is specially formulated for fragile skin – skin that has lower resistance to aggressors – and apply a purifying moisturiser like A-DERMA Phys-AC Perfect Anti-Blemish Fluid, $49.90 (40 ml) to control sebum production and mattify unwanted shine even as it revives parched cells.
This hydrating lightweight fluid from A-DERMA – a specialist brand for fragile skin – gradually releases its active ingredients throughout the day. It even doubles as a make-up base, so you need not apply foundation to conceal blemishes.
Formulated with gentle ingredients, this soothing fluid is ideal for super-sensitive skin. It also promotes epidermal repair and reduces post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (or acne scarring). As we age, metabolism slows down and skin takes a longer time to bounce back from any damage. A-DERMA’s Phys-AC Perfect Anti-Blemish Fluid is specifically formulated to improve healing and reduce acne scars with patented ingredient, Cicahyalumide®, which has a proven efficacy against residual marks, helping you fight adult acne, without leaving any marks behind.
A-DERMA is available at selected Guardian and Watsons stores. For more information, visit A-DERMA’s Facebook Page.
