It might seem counterintuitive, drinking tequila could actually help you achieve your weight loss goals. Of course, we’re not asking you to chug down shots of the Mexican beverage like you would with water but, a drink once in a while might be beneficial.

Agave Plant Tequila
The blue agave plant is harvested for use in tequila.

Agavins — not to be confused with agave syrup that’s made with fructose and should be consumed in moderation — is a sort of indigestible fructan that helps to improve digestion and strengthen your immune system. As Dr Kenneth Woliner of Holistic Family Medicine in Florida has written, while our bodies might not be able to digest fructans, the friendly bacteria in our digestive system thrives on fructans and helps improve the absorption of calcium and other minerals.

A study conducted has shown that the subjects who were given water with some added agave fructans ate less, allowing them to lose weight and lower their blood sugar levels compared to those who consumed water with bits of artificial sweeteners.
