This Earth Day, here are five easy lifestyle changes you can do everyday to help make our planet greener and better for our future generations.
There are so many ways you can do that and cut your monthly utilities bill at the same time. From reusing bath water to water your plants to turning the tap off when brushing your teeth, every drop matters.

Plastic bags are extremely harmful to marine animals, as when they end up in the ocean, they get eaten by unsuspecting turtles or fish or end up trapping these poor creatures. Recycle plastic bags you got from the supermarket, but the next time you go, bring along a reusable cloth bag for your groceries.

You may not realise it, but keeping your chargers plugged in all the time is sapping electricity you don’t need. It only takes a second to reduce your energy consumption by removing your phone and laptop chargers from the sockets.

Car-light, that is. Reduce carbon emissions by carpooling with friends or colleagues wherever possible, or better yet, travel by bicycle or walk if the distance to your destination isn’t far. Not only are these methods much cheaper than driving, they’re also healthier. And with the rise of bike-sharing services like ofo, getting a more eco-friendly ride is much easier today.

Be a discerning shopper and look out for environmentally-conscious brands that use eco-packaging or donate part of their profits to planet-saving causes. Also, opt for natural, organic products and do your research before making a big purchase. Is the company ethical? Is being eco-friendly part of their mission statement?

Here’s how four women in Singapore changed their lifestyles to do their part in saving planet Earth:
1. Kathy Xu, 34, quit her job to save sharks from extinction.
Today, she is a shark and marine conservationist who founded The Dorsal Effect, an ecotourism project that works with fishermen to stop overfishing by offering them alternative livelihoods.
Sharks are caught mainly for their fins, and then cruelly tossed back into the ocean. This picture was taken on one of Kathy’s trips to Lombok, Indonesia, where a lot of overfishing occurs.
After watching the documentary Sharkwater, and then having a chance encounter with a whale shark while diving in Australia, Kathy was moved to quit being a teacher and dive headfirst into shark conservation. Read more about her inspiring story here.

2. Eliza Inoue, 31, and Wuen Lin Tan, 42, opened a store selling eco-friendly fashion and yoga products.
A life-changing yoga fund-raising challenge inspired this enterprising duo not just to live a greener lifestyle, but to create a better and greener society. They founded multi-label eco-store Touch The Toes that sells a range of sustainable clothes and yoga items.
Besides being eco-friendly, they also source for ethically-made products, as they believe that sustainable fashion isn’t just about knowing the material, but how the item was produced. Read more about their inspiring story here.
3. Militza Maury, 37, creates her own organic skincare products from scratch.
After discovering one morning that the baby products she’d been using for her daughter were full of harmful chemicals, Militza decided enough was enough.
She began making her own organic skincare products from scratch, and started eco-lifestyle blog Little Green Dot to help others do the same.
She makes body butter and other items with all-natural ingredients that you can easily find in your own pantry. Want to know more? Read about her inspiring story here.
