There is a beautiful quote about family from Friedrich Nietzsche. The famous philosopher once wrote, “In family life, love is the oil that eases friction, the cement that binds closer together, and the music that brings harmony.”
It’s true, isn’t it? No matter how hard the daily grind may be, it’s the love that you get from your family at the end of it that makes it all feel better. You come home, you see your loved ones and you’re instantly reminded why it’s all worthwhile. This special kind of love deserves to be celebrated, and that’s where MADLY can help.
As a way of celebrating the ties that bind, MADLY invites you to create a ring that is as unique as your family. Using specially-chosen stones – each one signifying the birth month of each family member – you are able to put the entire story of your family onto a beautiful piece of heirloom jewellery that will accompany you everywhere you go.
And it’s not just family in the traditional sense that these rings apply to.
If you pause to think about it, your best friends are like an extension of family, and of yourself. They know you – sometimes better than you know yourself – and they are there with you through thick and thin. In this spirit, MADLY also invites you to think about the friendships that have shaped you, and how you can commemorate your BFF too.
Making a bespoke piece of jewellery can be daunting, but that’s where Team MADLY comes in. With their artisans on hand to guide you every step of the way, they take all the anxiety out of the process, so you can fully enjoy this special experience. They’ll listen to your wishes, collaborate with you on the details, and present you with a beautifully-finished symbolic piece you will treasure forever.

This striking family ring was an anniversary gift. As the client was living in the US, much of the communication between her and the designers happened over WhatsApp and emails.
The spectacular end-result is centered around some incredibly rare gemstones, like a neon pink spinel and a lagoon tourmaline – to represent the months of August and October respectively – which are the birthstones of her two daughters. MADLY also used princess-cut tanzanites to represent her husband’s birth month in December.
To finish, a couple of Paraiba tourmalines were used as a way of commemorating their anniversary in October. Plus, they gave the ring some extra sparkle too!
2. Everlasting Through The Ages

Not all family rings need to feature birthstones! They can simply be gemstones in your favourite colour and cut.
This client brought in her mother’s old solitaire diamond, and wanted to give it a refreshed setting. Together, the client and the designers decided to go with gemstones that were vibrantly coloured, and created a captivating heirloom ring that both mother and daughter would cherish.
3. A Mother's Love
image
Like two precious babies lovingly cradled in their mother’s arms, this stunning family ring was inspired by the client’s initial, “C”.
The stones used in this design were centered on her children’s birthstones. The diamond represents April, and the alexandrite represents June. When set together, the stones gave the fluid lines of the ring a poetic appeal.
4. Modern Family
image
This was another classic family ring that MADLY has done. The main stone was a topaz in the client’s favourite colour, and was also used to represent her daughter’s birth month.
Flanking each side were lavender spinel marquise stones, for her son’s birth month in August, and green emeralds to signify her husband’s birth month in May.
To complete the ring, diamonds were used as a representation of the client’s birth month in April.
5. Friends For Life
image
BFFs are family too! Together with their clients, MADLY created these cluster rings to celebrate their lifelong friendship.
Each of these bespoke rings feature a similar style to signify the unbreakable bond between these friends. Yet, every ring was given its own unique personality, as it incorporated each woman’s favourite coloured gemstone.
Now, you’re ready to embark on your bespoke journey, but where do you start? To help you understand the process better, we follow The Singapore Women’s Weekly’s Editor-in-Chief Barbara Koh as she gets a family ring designed at MADLY. “It’s such a special journey,” she says, “and you’re filled with a sense of love and satisfaction when you see that piece of jewellery – which signifies your family – come together right before your eyes.”

1. Pre-consultation
image
Before making your way down to MADLY’s atelier, you are advised to call ahead to schedule an appointment.
While you’re firming up your appointment, you will also be asked to provide some guiding details, so the team of designers can prepare in advance. It’s best to have some semblance of what you’re looking to make.
It’s also helpful to have an idea of the budget that you’re comfortable with, and to have the birth months of your family members ready. This gives the designers more information, which they can use in preparing the right stones before your face-to-face consultation.
2. Consultation
image
When you enter MADLY’s beautiful studio space, you will be shown a selection of stones and cuts to pick from.
This stage also takes into consideration all the details that you’ve provided them prior to meeting – including birth dates and budgets.
During this face-to-face consultation, the designers will talk you through the process of creating your jewellery, and will show you several configurations of stones. Feel free to communicate your preferences to them!
Our Editor-in-Chief, Barbara Koh, paid MADLY a visit to collaborate on a family ring. She wanted aquamarine stones to represent her husband and her son’s birth month in March, and tanzanite stones to represent her daughter’s and her birth month in December.
At the studio, Barbara was warmly received by designers Gina and Renee, who showed her several aquamarine and tanzanite stones. It was a genuinely eye-opening experience, because MADLY has a massive range of cuts and sizes for every gemstone!
3. Presenting your mould
image
At your face-to-face consultation, the designers will also create a mould of how your stones will likely look, once they are set into a ring.
Using clear trays, they will arrange the stones according toyour desired configuration, and place it over your finger. This gives you a clearer mental picture of how your ring will look when it is finished, and it allows you the chance to tweak anything according to your preferences.
During her consultation, Barbara was looking at a budget of $6,500. However, as the consultation went on, she began to consider increasing her budget to $8,500. To help Barbara visualise what both budgets would allow, two ring designs were created for her to pick from.
4. Sketching
image
The process doesn’t end at the ring moulds.
As an added step, the designers will also create true-to-life sketches of their ring designs from different views and angles. These handmade sketches will help the client to have a complete vision of the finished product, and will be sent to the client after the face-to-face consultation.
5. Decisions, decisions

Finally, having seen both mould and sketch, you can now look forward to having your design made into a reality!
Once you’ve confirmed your dream design, it will take the team around two months to create your gorgeous bespoke family ring.
At the end of Barbara’s bespoke family ring journey, she was sent two different sketches that were based on her different budgets. Which design will she go with?
