If your hair is limp and flat, follow these easy hair tips that help boost volume and give your hair a healthy bounce:
1. Change your parting once in a while
This is the easiest trick: If you find that your hair gets flat after following the same old parting for a long time, switch up your part to make your hair look thicker and voluminous at the crown. If you have a centre-part, try a deep side part and notice instant fullness!
2. Backcomb (the right way)
Backcombing your roots is a surefire way to give a boost of height, volume and even bounce to your hair. But over-teasing your hair by combing too rigorously or using a lousy brush can damage cuticles and make it more vulnerable to tearing.
3. Don't overdo it with styling products
“An excessive use [of styling products] will flatten hair cuticles and weigh down on hair,” says Trichologist Kim Fong, at Svenson Hair Centre. This is especially so in our humid climate, so keep it simple!
4. Ask for a volumising root perm
At the salon, “request for a volumising root perm to increase body at the crown area and cut short your morning beauty routine,” advises Fiona Lim, Leading Stylist at Salon Vim 313.
5. Use sea salt spray before blowdrying your hair...
advises Maurice Chee, Creative Director at PREP Luxe. Avoid the roots and spritz directly onto the hair for an effortlessly voluminous look. Try the Davines More Inside Sea Salt Spray, $41, which won Best Sea Salt Spray in our Hair Awards 2016!
6. Blow-dry your hair upside down
It sounds too easy to be true, but gaining more oomph in your mane is as easy as flipping your head upside down when using the hair-dryer. This works because your roots are lifted up and away from the scalp via gravity.

7. Invest in a volume-building shampoo
Look for a lightweight shampoo that won’t strip your hair of its natural oils and lipids, such as Kiehl’s Rice & Wheat Volumising Shampoo that creates fullness for limp and lifeless hair.
8. Get colouring
Ask for babylights or a balayage at your next salon session as these give your hair texture and dimension, thus giving the illusion of more volume.
9. Remember these?
There’s a reason why hot rollers still exist, and salons still use them – because they work! While you apply makeup or make breakfast, put your hair up for about 20 minutes, removing when the rollers are cool. Then brush them out for the full effect.
10. Drink lots of water
Just as how your body gets dehydrated when you don’t hydrate enough, a dehydrated scalp can wreak havoc on your hair! Hair gets brittle and thins, becoming more prone to breakage. In order to get thick, luscious hair, remember to drink up! Every little bit helps.
