The Asian obsession with Ash Brown hair colours is real! Such colours usually require bleaching to remove the warm pigments in order to make room for the cool pigments. In general, there are three types of Ash Brown – Blue; Green and Purple undertones. Finding the right Ash Brown can brighten your complexion and make you look younger. However, if you’ve dyed your hair with a dark shade, you should avoid it.
“Never ever dye your hair black, be it in the salon or with an off-the-shelf hair dye if you intend to try different hair shades in the future. Any colour correction involving black is an extremely painful process as the hair tends to be patchy after bleaching or colouring. #Hairdresser’sNightmare” says Wai Kan, Associate Salon Director of Chez Vous.

Greyish hair phenomenon hasn’t shown any signs of stopping this year. Think charcoal hair, silver hair, dusty ash blonde and many other grey tone highlights. Salons here have been receiving endless requests for these hair colours even though they are not for everyone. To cater to their customers’ wishes, Chez Vous Hair Salon has created a new #FakeAsh Colour Service, powered by Goldwell’s technology – it requires one pre-lightening session to achieve various gorgeous ashy and dusty shades.
#GreyHairDon’tCare? You should. Because grey hair does not suit everyone. “If you have dyed your hair with colours that contain red or copper, it is not advisable as after the lightening process, the hair will still retain an orange or brassy tone. This usually requires more rounds of lightening than usual to achieve the ash tone and will compromise your hair’s integrity severely,” advises Victor Liu, Salon Director of Chez Vous.

Ultra Violet was named the 2018 Pantone Colour of the Year so you’ll see purple makeup and hair trending this year. But purple is not an easy colour to pull off, as it projects a fun, vibrant persona which might not work in all settings and occasions, especially in a professional workplace. Violet hair also requires brighter makeup colours to complement it and looks best only when you have the right makeup on.
“Violet takes away colour from some Asian women’s complexion. Unless you are someone who wears makeup daily, we don’t advise you to go with a whole head of violet as it might make you look pale and dull,” says Veyond Chong, Associate Salon Director of Chez Vous.

Every woman should try going blonde at least once – it’s strangely liberating as it’s such a huge change especially for Asian women who are used to having darker hair most of their lives. Before you go all platinum, remember that dyeing blonde means having to strip your hair completely of its natural pigments. “Removing dark and warm pigments from your hair using bleach is necessary for us to lighten your hair. Salons and hairdressers can prettify the language using terms like Lightener, Oil Lightener, High Lift Blonding Kit and Decolouriser. But ultimately, it’s Bleach. And there’s no need to elaborate further what it does to your hair.
“In the event that you choose to go blonde, opt for one of the most expensive bleaches on the market – Goldwell Silk Lift. It’s effective yet much gentler than most other brands of bleach, thanks to its IntraLipid and SilkProteinComplex Technology,” suggests Shawn Chia, Associate Director of Chez Vous. A beautiful red tone is a bold choice for hair colour, and when the shade is right for your skin tone, it can change up your look and accentuate your features. However, if you have sensitive skin which flushes easily, especially due to our warm and humid weather, try to avoid rose shades like Rose Brown, Rose Pink, Rose Copper or Rose Gold.
“Rose Hair Colour Series is beautiful – even though red hair is short-lived and does not last as long, it’s a good shade to try if you want to experiment with a different hair colour. However, it is not recommended for women with sensitive skin as the red pigment in these hair shades will amplify the redness on the skin, making you look more flushed than usual,” says Readen Chia, Associate Director of Chez Vous.

Many women are shying away from warm tones as they feel that warm tones are boring and old-fashioned. Cool hair tones have been trending recently as they are exciting and different, but before you choose cool tones, be aware that Asian skin has a yellow or brown base, so a cool tone might not suit you.
“Instead of following hair trends blindly, choosing the right hair colour that best complement your skin tone matters much more, as the wrong colour can make your skin look dull and patchy. Vice versa, the right hair colour can brighten your skin tone considerably. For the best way to determine what hair colours suit you best, opt for #RightColourMatters diagnosis methodology designed specially for Asian skin, developed by Chez Vous X Goldwell Singapore (click next frame above to find out more),” says Joyce Wan, Associate Director of Chez Vous.

Sussing out your next hair colour is no easy feat especially for Asian women, given that most of the online beauty guides reference Caucasian and Hispanic hair. Westernised techniques determine the right hair colours using a few criteria: Matching hair colours to a list of non-Asian complexion and eye colour; assessing whether warm or cool hair tones suit better by identifying if you turn red or tan under the sun; or identifying which type of blonde can best complement you depending if your veins turn blue or green under natural light. These techniques might be useful for Caucasians, but confusing and unsuitable for Asians.
In 2018, Chez Vous Hair Salon, in collaboration with Goldwell Singapore, has designed a simple, yet accurate methodology to determine the right hair colours for Asians, available exclusively at Chez Vous Hair Salon. Watch the video above to learn more.
