#1 Making mascara from Oreos

Firstly, how can you put something so delicious somewhere other than your mouth? Youtuber Katharine Ward starts off by grinding up Oreos (without the cream, of course) and adding water with eye primer as binding agents to make it more tacky. Then, the paste is applied using a mascara wand.

There are huge risks when it comes to putting products that are not tested for use near the eye, especially if you wear contact lenses. These items will irritate and possible cause inflammation when they accidentally fall into the eye. Plus, how do you explain having Oreo crumbs in your eye when you go to the doctor with a sore eye?

#2 Using cotton balls to plump lashes

Youtuber Huda Beauty is no stranger to weird beauty hacks. In fact, we had to resist featuring more than one video from her. Her lash hack is one that raises much concern. After applying one coat of lash primer and mascara, she proceeds to retrieve fibres from cotton balls with a spoolie and combing them through her lashes to add volume and length. Rinse and repeat for a more dramatic effect.

Again, putting items that are not certified for use near the eye is potentially dangerous. We recommend using brush on fibres like Eyeko Black Magic Lash Boost, Too Faced Better Than False Lash Extreme or Faux Fayc Fauxlash Mascara Duo.

#3 Contouring with household items

We’ve seen people use the strangest things like shoes and tape to contour, but Youtuber NikkieTutorials really takes it up a notch by emptying her kitchen drawer. We’re seeing spoons, forks, whisk, bottle opener, spaghetti server, dish washing sponge and dish washing brush being used as tools for contouring. All these were done in jest of course, but they were definitely inspired by the plethora of things used as contouring guides.

Our take on this is simple – everyone’s face is uniquely different and the best way to learn how to contour your own face is to practice and not get too serious about it if you mess up. It’s makeup after all, you can just wash it off and start over. The fun part is learning more about your own face, and how to best enhance your features.

#4 Using deodorant to de-slick skin

Props to Youtube duo Eleventhgorgeous for committing themselves to this test. Using the red carpet trick of using deodorant on the face to help it stay matte, the girls applied it to areas that would often be shiny after a hot day. Cue an “intense” workout, and they returned picture-perfect.

It’s not something we’d recommend as some of these deodorant contains fragrances which might irritate the skin, plus they might potentially clog pores and cause breakouts.

#5 Applying foundation with a sock

It’s a very bold claim by Youtuber mayratouchofglam when she says that her trusty sock is going to be the next Beauty Blender (I know, right?). The effects look pretty okay on video but it will all come down to the sock you use. According to her, choose a sock that is thicker and fuzzier on the inside, and soft enough so that it doesn’t drag on the skin.

#6 Removing blackheads with white glue

Youtuber GDiipa Makeup & SkinCare starts off by using a cotton pad soaked with warm water on the nose to open up the pores and applying a thick layer of Elmer’s glue to the nose. After it dries completely, it is then peeled off like you would with a regular pore strip.

Elmer’s glue is non-toxic but we’re pretty sure that it wouldn’t smell great while it’s on your nose. Products that are applied on the skin undergo rigorous tests and years of research to ensure that it’s safe. While some of these tutorials look fun and are more economical, think twice before you attempt them.
