Problem #1: Acne and pimples
Solution
Firstly, don’t touch them! Squeezing or picking at them might introduce bacteria to broken skin, causing them to be even more inflammed. Use products like salicylic acid, which encourages exfoliation and unclogs pores daily. Spot treatments which contain sulphur and colloidal silver help to dry up pimples quickly.
Problem #2: Pigmentation and dark spots
Solution:
If you haven’t made it a habit to apply sunscreen daily, it’s never too late to start. UV damage is one of the major cause of pigmentation and the surest way of preventing that is staying out of the sun, and being religious with your sunscreen.
For existing pigmentation and spots, turn to spot treatments that work on inhibiting melanin production and eliminating them. Skincare products containing active ingredients like oligopeptide 34, zinc gluconate, glucosamine and vitamin C are known to lighten spots and increase overall radiance.
Problem #3: Dehydration
Solution:
Not to be confused with dry skin, where it is lacking in natural oil, dehydrated skin means it is lacking in water content, often due to environmental stress, climate or even lack of water intake. Treat dehydrated skin by applying serum or moisturiser within three minutes of cleansing. While skin is still wet, cells are separated and ready to soak in more moisture.
Problem #4: Redness and irritation
Solution:
Redness and itchiness usually means damaged skin barrier and needs to be restored. Go for products which contain niacinamide, an ingredient which boosts ceramide production and improves lipid barrier function. Linoleic acid, a type of fatty acid, also helps restore barrier function while moisturising skin.
When targeting redness, it’s a good idea to pick products with anti-inflammatory properties. Products containing oat, cucumber and vitamin E are great for reducing overall redness and calming skin down.
