Of all the fashion trends that we’ve been seeing this season, the utilitarian trend has to be our favourite of the lot — and it’s with good reason. Where some trends become a little frivolous (and unwearable), the utilitarian fashion trend remains entirely practical and easy to wear.
To help you nail the look, we sought the help of the super-stylish Nicole Wong. Where most social media influencers never progress beyond your smartphone, Nicole has found a way to turn her talent and passion for creating social media content into a full-time business. Since co-founding nplusc with her husband Clinton Leicester, Nicole’s work has expanded to include marketing, PR and creative design. This do-it-all girlboss sits down with us for a quick chat on her work, her style and what gets her going.
What’s a regular work day like for you?
“There are no two days that are the same for me! Most of the time, a large chunk of my days are filled with meetings with both existing and potential clients and partners. When I’m not running between appointments, I’m off somewhere creating new content for my personal and corporate social media accounts. I also strongly believe that we all have to strike a balance in life, so it’s also important for me to squeeze in time for a workout, because it helps me to take a breather and gather my thoughts.”
Tell us more about your personal style?
“I definitely lean towards anything that’s comfortable. As I’m running around quite a bit, boots and sneakers are my best friends. I also like to play with androgynous pieces, because I like to contrast something that looks very feminine with more masculine pieces. Tailoring is something that I really appreciate in my clothes. Lastly, I go for anything that has clean lines. I tend to pass on pieces that are too fussy, because pretty as they may look, they’re not super functional all the time.”
When you shop for clothing, what do you look for in your purchases?
“Personally speaking, I rarely make impulse buys. Before I set money down to buy something, I always consider how long this item will last me. I don’t mean its durability, but rather, how often I will wear it, and if I can see myself wearing this in the years to come. After the initial excitement of holding something in my hands, I also try to reflect on whether I’m making a smart purchase or if I’m buying out of impulse. Only after all this thinking do I commit to buying something.”

What’s one item in your wardrobe you cannot live without?
“Definitely a good suit! Even after all these years, it’s still my go-to outfit when I need to look sharp and feel confident. When you wear a jacket or a pair of pants that flatters you in the right places, it instantly transforms the way you look, walk and how you feel about yourself. Plus, that perk-up is noticeable by everyone around you.”
What are the must-have pieces each woman needs?
“A tailored blazer for days when you need that extra confidence boost. Also, I think every woman needs to have a pair of statement earrings. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve relied on my earrings to dress up a casual outfit for a last-minute party. Lastly, a great pair of jeans, because the merits of a pair of feel-good, body-transforming jeans cannot be expounded enough.”
What advice would you give to busy women who want to look stylish at work?
“Be comfortable. I’ve learnt that when you prioritise your comfort and find clothes that work for your lifestyle, it gives you an unspoken sense of confidence. I’d also say that when you get dressed each morning, get dressed for you and no one else.”
