Plus, when it comes to cutting and styling Asian hair, one naturally turns to hairdressers who have a wealth of experience in that area.

Whether you’re looking for a chic new haircut or a wavy perm, or a trendy balayage, here are five Japanese salons in Singapore that can help get you there:
Stay at the forefront of trends at this state-of-the-art salon that uses cutting-edge techniques from Japan to give you a gorgeous look that enhances your features. Their niche cutting style, created by founders Shunji Matsuo and Kazuhide Inoue, aims to give you the most flattering haircut that suits both your facial structure and hair type. They also offer a range of hair spa services to keep your mane luscious and healthy, and if you’re looking to add waves to straight hair, this salon also won Best Perm in our Hair Awards this year.
Where: Ngee Ann City, Tower B #05-23 (Flagship)
Besides being hair maestros, the company is also dedicated to giving back to society. Their annual fashion event, Shunji Matsuo’s Makeover Magic, gives seniors aged 60 and above as well as cancer survivors glamorous makeovers to boost their confidence and put smiles on their faces.
The event was held on 9 October this year, and paid tribute to their founding father, Shunji Matsuo, who passed away exactly a year ago.
Each session at this Japanese salon feels exclusive, mostly thanks to its well-spaced and separated seating booths and cosy, welcoming ambience. Covo’s team of Japanese stylists were all trained in Japan and have 15 to 20 years of experience, and the salon offers bespoke treatments so you get dedicated service from start to end. The salon also uses spring carbonated water shampoo to wash your hair, which claims to be more effective than regular water at eliminating dirt and grime.
Where: 87 East Coast Road #01-01 ; 43 Keong Saik Road
Helmed by their award-winning creative director, Yuichi Soga, who has nearly 30 years’ worth of industry experience, you can expect top-notch service and results at Aoyama. (Yuichi is also the one who personally trains all of the salon’s hairstylists.) They offer a variety of services, with a focus on keeping your hair strong and healthy even after chemical treatments. Plus, they use eco-friendly hair products that are more gentle on your hair and scalp.
Where: #05-34 The Clementi Mall; #B1-37 Westgate; #03-04 Century Square; #02-19 Harbourfront Centre
If you want to try rainbow hair or trendy highlights, this salon’s team of friendly and attentive Japanese stylists (all eight of them!) will make you feel right at home. You can expect a thorough consultation, whereby a stylist will study your face structure and your hair type to suggest the most suitable style for you. What makes them stand out is also their after-care service, where they teach you how to maintain and manage your new hair at home.
Where: 38A Lorong Mambong, Holland Village
Best known for executing voluminous styles in natural and office-friendly colours, feel as though you’ve stepped into Tokyo at this beauty salon. Aube prides themselves on high-quality hospitality, so expect to be served by one dedicated stylist from start to end, all in a soothing atmosphere. The shampoo stations feature unique auto-reclining chairs, and you can even enjoy a pedicure while you relax.
