Creating a custom playlist is a sweet gesture that mum will love, especially when you choose songs that are meaningful and relevant to your relationships. Burn the playlist to a CD and decorate the case rather than just file-sharing the music. It’s nice to have something physical to unwrap.
We know that buying groceries costs money but you probably have most of the ingredients you need already. Plus, cooking costs nowhere near as much as an expensive themed dinner at a restaurant. Cook your mum a lovely dinner or bake her some goodies because food is a gift that everyone can appreciate.
This is an easy present that you can either pluck from a garden (with permission of course!) or source them for cheap at your local nursery, and the bulbs can grow anywhere in your mum’s home as a potted plant.
Every city has no-cost cultural events organised throughout the calendar year (Yep! Even in crazy expensive Singapore). Do your research and you can bring your mum to a concert, museum, festival, street market and more. Here‘s a good starting point.
Nothing beats a handmade gift. If you’re adept at knitting, try creating a tasteful accessory for your mum in her favourite colours. Putting in the time and effort to make something from scratch is something that is immeasurably valueable and you’re mum will appreciate the thought.
Most mums look to cook so compile recipes you love, along with any treasured family recipes and you’ll have a nostalgic gift for the ages. Choose themes relating to your mum’s life (e.g. school, favourite book, etc.) and introduce each section of the cookbook with a personalised note.
Have your mum relive her favourite moments in the Lion City by placing clues at your shared favourite hotspots. Think: places where she used to go as a child, spot where she frequented with your dad, or her favourite coffee shop.
Give Instagram a run for its money with a good old-fashioned photo album of you and your mum together over the years. If you hold onto things like ticket stubs or mementos from your life growing up with her, include those too and make it into a scrapbook.
Make your mum a movie that they’ll watch for years to come. Record all your siblings and relative talking about why they love you mum. And ask them for adorable, vintage footage or photos from her childhood years to include.
Your mum probably doesn’t want an art project with her initials on it (but by all means, go for it if that’s what she’s into) so flex your crafting muscles and make her some thoughtful art. Maybe a recreation of a Monet painting she loves?
Grab some nice stationary, sit down and get writing. It can be a sincere letter, a poem or a funny tribute to your dysfunctional mother-daughter relationship.
You don’t have to spend a lot of money to pamper your mum. Why not grab some makeup and make her over for your day out together. Watch some tutorials and practise on yourself first if you’re unsure but we’re sure you’ll want to make mum look as fab as she makes you feel.
