Angelina Jolie’s second marriage – to actor Billy Bob Thornton – dissolved in 2003, three years after she won an Oscar for her supporting role in Girl, Interrupted. Thornton and Jolie started dating shortly after meeting on the set of the 1999 film Pushing Tin.
Within months of winning the Best Actress Academy Award for her performance in Monster’s Ball in March 2002, her then-husband Eric Benet was in Meadows rehab clinic, allegedly, to treat sex addiction. She filed for divorce two years later and their split was official in January 2005.
One of the most memorable cases occurred in 2000 when Hilary Swank forgot to thank her husband Chad Lowe during her best actress speech for Boys Don’t Cry. She made it up to him during her 2005 speech for Million Dollar Baby — “I’d like to think I learn from past mistakes,” she said, adding, “Chad, you’re my everything” — but the pair ultimately split in 2007.
Julia Roberts’ long-term relationship with actor Benjamin Bratt only lasted a few months after her March 2001 Best Actress Oscar win for the biopic Erin Brockovich. They’d been dating since 1997.
Kate Winslet is another actress who became a single lady within a year of Oscar glory. The Brit star walked away a winner in February 2009 after getting the Best Actress Academy Award for The Reader. Fast-forward to March 2010 and she announced she had recently quietly separated from her second husband director Sam Mendes. Their divorce became final that October.
Morgan Freeman didn’t thank wife Myrna Colley-Lee when he won the 2005 best supporting actor award for Million Dollar Baby. The pair separated in 2007 and officially ended their 20-year plus marriage in 2010.
Rachel Weisz and Darren Aronofsky weren’t married, but they were on their way. The pair got engaged in 2005, but Weisz, who was seven months pregnant with their son, did not thank the filmmaker during her best supporting actress speech for The Constant Gardner in 2006. They called off their relationship in 2010.
Within months of winning the Best Actress Oscar for her performance in Walk The Line, Reese Witherspoon and her then-husband Ryan Philippe called it quits. The blonde actress picked up her award in March 2006 and the couple announced their shock break-up that October.
Sandra Bullock did not mention then-husband Jesse James by name (though she gestured his way while talking about love) as she accepted the award for The Blind Side in 2010. The pair divorced later that same year.
Sean Penn is a two-time example. For his first win in 2004, he thanked then-wife Robin Wright during his 2004 acceptance speech for Mystic River — calling her “an undying emotional inspiration” — but did not thank the House of Cards star during his Milk win in 2009. The pair divorced in 2010.
Jennifer Lawrence had been nominated for an Academy Award three times before winning the Best Actress gong for Silver Linings Playbook in 2013. But the win came at a price. Jen and her boyfriend actor Nicholas Hoult broke-up shortly after the ceremony. They then rekindled their relationship for a brief time before splitting again in 2014.
It was a long and drawn out wait for Leo who seemed to be always the nominee, never the winner until he finally received the Academy’s tick of approval for his grueling role in The Revenant. At the time of winning the golden statue for Best Actor, Leo was dating Sports Illustrated swimsuit model Kelly Rohrbach. The pair parted ways shortly after the awards.
