Alcohol in creams and toners leave a quick-dry finish, but the problem is it takes away moisture from the skin while doing so, leaving it dry and irritated.
Dyes and colourants are common allergens which causes sensitive skin to itch or redden. Look out for products with added dyes – they’re usually indicated towards the end of the ingredients list.
Although they give off a nice scent, some essential oils like peppermint, citronella and lemongrass are known to cause irritation to sensitive skin. It’s best to lay off bath and body products which contains essential oils.
The leading allergens for sensitive skin, fragrance is especially problematic for those suffering from eczema, rosacea and psoriasis. It’s safest for those with sensitive skin to choose fragrance-free products. In some extreme cases, you might also have to use fragrance-free detergents as the allergens are able to transfer from your clothes onto skin.
There are two types of sunscreens – chemical sunscreens, which absorb UV rays and physical sunscreen, which deflects it. Although both of them are generally safe, chemical sunscreens are known to cause free radicals and irritate the skin. Sunscreens containing Octylcrylene, Avobenzone, Octinoxate Octisalate and Oxybenzone are common ingredients in chemical sunscreens while Titanium Oxide and Zinc Oxide are physical sunscreens.
