8 Things About Infertility That No One Ever Talks About

Infertility is a touchy subject but experts have identified the five most important factors that can have an impact on your ability to conceive.

by Natalya Molok  /   March 23, 2018

Choosing to start a family is exciting and being well informed will give you the best chance of conceiving and having a successful pregnancy, but the heartache of infertility and not being able to conceive can be harder than most people think. While every person experiencing infertility will cope with it differently, here’s eight things some women wish they knew about before they went through the journey of going through fertility treatments:

8 Things About Infertility That No One Ever Talks About
Being around kids is hard

Seeing a stroller on the street is hard, and seeing a woman with a pregnant belly is hard. In fact, being around parents who have kids is hard. Because, it will be a constant reminder to you of the fact that you can’t conceive yet.

Time feels like the enemy

Every month that you’re still not pregnant feels like you’ve failed. With each passing month, your options become more limited and after a certain period of time, many women feel like they’ll never be able to conceive.

Infertility isn't reserved for older women

Most people think it’s only older couples (read: over 38-year-old) who can’t conceive but infertility doesn’t just affect “geriatric” people. Many young couples in their 20s and 30s are also affected by it.

Treatments are crazy expensive

Making babies is expensive! Each round of hormone treatments costs upwards of $1,000 and if you go down the IVF route, it’s even more expensive – sometimes reaching the hundreds of thousands. While the end result (a baby!) is worth it, it’s still an expensive pill to swallow.

Hormone therapy is no joke

Getting pumped with hormones while trying to conceived will affect you in more ways than you think. Your emotions will go into overdrive and your physical appearance may change too (extra weight down the middle? Yeah, no thanks). Also, women can look and feel pregnant as a result of hormones and not be pregnant. It’s a cruel joke.

Being infertile can be all-consuming
image

A week can seem like a month, a month can seem like a year, and a year can seem like a lifetime when you’re trying to get knocked up. Soon, doctor’s appointments, blood work results, and injections will become a normal and all-consuming part of your everyday life.

You will become absolutely desperate

Women going through infertility will go to great, strange lengths to make a baby. If they hear, “X will help you get pregnant,” they’ll do it. Ayurvedic herbal drops that taste horrible? Check. Healing crystals that will cleanse your womb? Check. When women start to believe it may never happen, they do crazy things.

Social media will be extra annoying
image

When you’re experiencing infertility, every single post will seem to be about gender reveals, baby announcements or adorable photos of young parents and their babies laughing in the sunshine. It can become too much for many women to bear so changing your social media habits is inevitable.
