This Wellness Coach Drinks A Pandan Brew Daily To Cleanse Her Gut & Skin

Meet Cynthea Lam, founder of Super Farmers, who believes that beauty truly comes from within

Cynthea Lam Skin Deep Beauty and Skincare Routine Interview feature

Rebecca Toh

In 2015, Cynthea’s daughter had a near-death experience with pneumonia at three years old. With nothing to her name, she was broke from the medical bills and long hospitalisation period. On top of that, she made the choice to leave her corporate career to focus on nurturing her daughter back to good health. This incident inspired her to start Super Farmers, a wellness company dedicated to helping people eat and live better through food and lifestyle education.

Since her daughter’s near-death experience, Cynthea delved into a lifestyle focused on wholesome cooking rooted in nutrition. This change also brought healing to her 30-year episode with eczema and chronic insomnia.

As a wellness coach, she believes in working from the inside out, choosing to take this shared approach when it comes to all things beauty. From taking immunity-enriching herbs on the daily to swapping sunscreen for antioxidant-rich foods, her routine is simple and focused on nourishing the skin and body from within.

In our latest series Skin Deep, we’re talking to women about their favourite beauty secrets, tips, and techniques. What they put on their faces, hair, and bodies and why. Skin Deep goes beyond the surface and explores the relationship women have with beauty and wellness — and what that means to them today.

Read on to find out Cynthea Lam’s go-to herbs and how she likes to drink them to improve her gut and skin.

What is your skincare and makeup routine like? How has that changed with Covid-19?

Not much! I stopped wearing makeup since I stopped working in the corporate world, so, my skin has been breathing for quite a few years. I’m a less-is-more kind of person and believe that inner health fuels outer beauty.

My morning begins with a simple washing with just water if there’s too much grime from the night before. Then, I use the Fresh Vitamin Nectar Serum as it instantly nourishes and hydrates. I know this is going to sound preposterous but I don’t use sunscreen! Every time I use sunscreen, my skin would break out. Also, most sunscreens use chemicals for high SPF protection. Also, I don’t like the feeling of a film on my skin the whole day. I also believe the antioxidants we ingest on a daily basis can negate some of the excess UV exposure. Generally, our bodies are built to withstand quite a bit of toughening, so I won’t be running when the sun is out — I’ll put on a hat and get on with work!

I wash my face thoroughly with Kora Organic’s Foaming Cleanser (I’ve been using this since 2012!) — I love how it cleans so well without feeling squeaky clean. Then I’ll use Zyu’s Revitalising Tonic that has a touch of Salicylic Acid for some dead-skin scouring. It always makes my skin feel brighter and ready to absorb any moisturiser I massage in later. I love the luxurious feelings of oils, so I’d use the Moringa Oil by Lily & Mortimer which has a touch of Lavender to calm the skin. And alternate it Tatcha’s The Dewy Skin Cream on nights I want something lighter — this amazing cream goes right in and doesn’t leave a film. When I’m feeling less rushed, I’d also use Fresh’s Rose Oil-infused Serum before the oils and moisturiser.

As a believer that beauty comes from within (literally), what are some nourishing and skin-benefiting plants or recipes you can share with us?

I truly believe in building a strong immunity — whether for the inside or out. As our skin is also an organ, it will benefit from the immunity-boosting things we eat and drink. I take big doses of Echinacea and Ginseng and indulge in nutritionist-grade pure minerals like Magnesium Phosphate every day. I also make my family take them. Whilst we get our daily dose of vitamins from foods we eat, minerals are scarce no thanks to modern farming methods and stress-filled lifestyles. Minerals are essential in our daily cellular functions, so it is a must to include mineral-rich foods in my daily meals.

Bone broths, bananas and dark leafy vegetables are a must for our family, in addition to the supplements we take. I’ve also stopped drinking for a few years; I’m a teetotaller now, and love the feeling of not having hangovers or alcohol-induced disturbed sleep (that always dries up my skin the next day) and just being in full control of my physical and mental health, is the best feeling ever!

I also have two brews in my fridge every day and drink them like water. The simplest ways to take herbs is to drink them. That way, it’s gentle on your system and you don’t over-dose. My two go-to’s:

A pandan, lemongrass, and mint concoction. This helps to soothe my digestive system by purging the extra grease, soothing any bloatedness and pains from the bloating. And a basil brew, as it helps adapt the cells to its environment that could include pollution, medication and stress. It also helps combat low-grade inflammation in our bodies.

What’s the cheapest product you actually use and love?
image

My mum started me on olive oil as a little girl, so that’s probably the cheapest product I have for anything from itchy skin to unruly hair, and even dry cuticles.

What's a product you don't mind splurging on and why?
image

The most expensive product in my cupboard is probably the Tatcha Cream. I brought it with me to Australia during winter last year and I was the only one in my group whose skin didn’t crack or itch from the cold and dry weather. I’d take a hot shower and immediately before I even dry myself, slather on Tatcha on my face and lips. My skin drank it all up and left me with supple skin the whole time we were there.

What was your relationship with beauty like 10 years ago and what is it like now? How has it changed over the years?
image

The world tells us that beauty is skin deep and so I used to invest in the best makeup, eyelash extension, BB-creams — you name it, I had them all.

I’ve since learned that we have so many microscopic organisms living on our skin, then it’s not what you put on it that matters, but how you give it a good defence to maintain a balance, that truly matters.

Now, I invest in going to a good eyebrow embroidery artist to give me fuller brows so that I still feel good when going out bare-faced. Apart from that, I don’t have anything on my face.
