If you’re one of those who consumes a handful of supplements daily, you might rejoice over this piece of news. There’s a vitamin that has been found to be able to prevent colds and flus – and it’s not vitamin C.

Rather, a study published in the British Medical Journal found that vitamin D, which is a hormone produced when you’re exposed to the sun, can help prevent infections. This is because it helps the body produce antimicrobial peptides to combat infections.

The study done by researchers at the Queen Mary University of London ran 25 trials on 11,321 people to test the effect of vitamin D supplements on preventing respiratory tract infections, including colds and flus, and found that for every 33 people who consumed the supplements, one would not be infected.

The researchers also found that those who consumed the supplements regularly – on a daily or weekly basis – saw more effectiveness compared to those who took a large dose every month.

Previous studies have highlighted other health benefits of vitamin D, from having a longer life expectancy to having healthier bones.

While we have no problems getting our dose of vitamin D in Singapore, here are a few foods that will help boost the Vit D levels in your body:

1. Salmon

A small portion of cooked salmon will give you 90 percent of the recommended dietary intake of Vitamin D. Make sure to purchase salmon that has been caught from the wild, if not, then sustainably farmed.

2. Egg Yolk

Eggs are another food that contains vitamin D in small amounts. Eating one egg daily will provide you with approximately 10 percent of your daily needs.

3. Fish Roe

A great source of Vitamin D, fish roe also provides Vitamin A, which helps with eyesight and vision, skin and has been shown to help reduce the risk of cancer as well.

4. Kale

Kale is a nutritional superfood, which contains trace amounts of Vitamin D. Nevertheless, it should be included in any healthy diet to help reach the daily recommended quantities of all vital nutrients.

5. Tofu & Soybeans

When we say Vitamin D foods, tofu probably isn’t top of the list? However, one fifth of a block of raw tofu has lots of lovely Vitamin D in it, and so does a handful of soybeans.

6. Cheese

Cheese is one of the top five foods high in Vitamin D so having an extra slice in the morning may not be a bad idea after all. Ricotta cheese, in particular, provides the maximum amount of Vitamin D among the other cheeses.

7. Spinach

Spinach, while high in Vitamin D, is a richer source of folate and an equally good source of iron and fibre.

8. Portobello Mushrooms

Surprisingly, the dried versions of portobello mushrooms are high in vitamin D. This may be due to the fact that they’re are great at sucking up sunlight. These mushrooms are also rich in B vitamins like B1 and B2.

9. Milk

Most types of cow’s milk is fortified with vitamin D. You can also buy yoghurt and other dairy products that have been fortified (usually whole milk not semi-skimmed).

10. Tinned Fish

Tinned fish, such as tuna or sardines, contain over a quarter of the recommended amount of vitamin D.
