11 Essential Drugstore Medications You Should Always Have At Home

by Marie Choo  /   December 17, 2018

It’s not uncommon to be under the weather or experience mild aches and pains that are not serious enough to warrant a visit to the doctor. For times like these, it’s always useful to keep a few medicines at home, apart from the common paracetamol, to treat self-limiting conditions.

These medicines can save you a lot of discomfort and possibly, an expensive trip to the A&E in the middle of the night. They’re also usually readily available at drugstores like Guardian and Unity, as well as certain supermarkets like NTUC.

That said, it’s always important to read the label and the accompanying leaflet for instructions on the use and dosage for the medicine, and be aware of the possible side effects. Some of the items below can only be dispensed by a pharmacist, but it’s good to stock up on them for when you’re feeling under the weather.

When in doubt, always consult a doctor before taking any medicines and if symptoms persist, be sure to see one as soon as you can.

11 Essential Drugstore Medications You Should Always Have At Home
1. Oral antihistimines

Antihistimines like Zyrtec-R, $12.50, are a lifesaver and many don’t leave home without some. Allergies can strike anytime, be it from food, dust, or insect bites, and an antihistamine offers symptomatic relief from itching, hives and swelling. It can also help to provide relief from cold symptoms such as runny and itchy nose.

2. Decongestant eye drops

Naphcon-A, $7.65, before anything else. This eye drop works by temporarily narrowing the blood vessels in the eye and block the histamines that causes the allergic reaction of itching, puffiness, redness and watering. Redness should be gone within moments. However, it must not be used to treat redness and irritation from wearing contact lenses. It can be used at least 15 minutes before you wear contact lens and must never be used when you are wearing.

*Please consult a pharmacist before using.

3. Lozenges
