If you can’t recall the last time you’ve been to the salon or if your hair feels flat and out of shape, it’s high time for an update. A fresh cut or trim can make you look fresher, slimmer and even take the years off.
Here, three hair experts give advice on the latest haircut trends for your hair length, and the best products to maintain your ‘do:
Go for: the chic pixie cut
Make a bold statement by swapping flowing locks for a short, sassy pixie, just like Scarlett Johansson’s!
“Whether one prefers a neat pixie cut, a tousled style or a choppy look – the pixie is still the A-list hairstyle du jour,” says Associate Salon Director Shawn Chia of Chez Vous Hair. We love Jennifer Hudson’s crop of curls that give her face a slimming effect by giving her crown more volume!
Shawn adds, “Pixie cuts are usually associated with empowerment, and being a ‘brand new me'”. Girls Generation’s Soo Young took her short hair even shorter with more layered ends that make her look fresher and more youthful.
Go for: The bob with a twist
To get Taylor Swift’s look, ask your stylist for the wavy bob, otherwise known as the “wob”, is all the rage now, according to Monica Tan, Director of Kimage.
“Waves were big with longer hair last year, but now you see it creeping on to shorter styles as well. Waves add lots of definition and movement to the bob”, Monica says. We think Natalie Portman’s stylist would agree!
You can either opt for a soft ceramic perm or rely on a trusted curling iron to get a stylish wob a la Alexa Chung.
Go for: the stylish midi
Also called the “midi”, “a medium-length cut that hits at the collarbone with layers and texturised ends is great for women who would like to cut their long tresses shorter but not ready to take it above the shoulder,” says Monica. Jessica Alba shows us how its done.
Shawn also recommends the tousled, textured look, as seen on Jenna Dewan-Tatum, as “it is easy to create, maintain and tie up when needed. It also makes one look a little sexier – as compared to a straight look.”
But if you love sleek, straight hair, let Rose Byrne’s ombre look inspire you. A side part is also very slimming and gives more definition to your face.
Go for: feathered layers and bangs
The latest trend according to Joseph Foo, Director of Kenjo Salon, is all about creating a “voluminous look”, just like Hani from EXID.
For hair like Dakota Johnson’s, “add feathered layers to create a soft, sleek, elegant and simple look”, Joseph advises. Then, amp up the volume with bangs – the feathery see-through fringe is very on-trend.
In fact, “you need not make drastic changes. Top up your current style with bangs and it will be a fresh new look!” Monica notes. South Korea actress Yoon Eun Hye’s bangs make her look younger and frame her face perfectly.
