How To Use Less Plastic When You're A Beauty Junkie
Avoid Buying Scrubs With Microbeads
While plastic bottles, tubes and jars are obvious plastic pollutants, the real culprits that are polluting the environment even more are micro plastics in the form of microbeads often found in face and body scrubs.
These microbeads often end up polluting the oceans and rivers. According to the UK’s Environmental Audit Committee, about 86 tons of exfoliant microbeads from the UK alone are washed the ocean. Fishes and other marine life may then ingest these microbeads, which could also cause them to die.
Based on a United Nations Environment Project report, scientists fear that chemicals in plastics ingested by marine life could end up poisining us too, especially when ingested in high quanities. A recent study also highlighted that more than a quarted of all fish in markets like Indonesia and California now contain plastic.
So, what can you do about it? Switch to face and body scrubs that contain natural ingredients like sugar and sea salt or opt for products that use exfoliating beads made of wax and rice powder. Alternatively, make your own scrubs — this way, you know you’re only putting natural ingredients on your face.
Switch To Glass Packaging
While it might be slightly more expensive, glass packaging is definitely a lot better than plastic packaging. The great thing about glass is that it doesn’t contain chemicals than could potentially leak into the ocean and pollute it even further.
Certain brands like Laneige and Innisfree have refillable beauty products that don’t pollute the environment as much.
Brands like innisfree and NARS also have magnetic palettes that let you buy and customise your favourite products and keep them in one big palette instead of having to buy multiple big packages.
Shop At Brands That Recycle Their Packaging
Brands like Kiehl’s, LUSH and innisfree all let you return the empty packaging of their products and have loyalty programs that reward you for caring for the environment.
At Kiehl’s, you’ll receive a stamp collection card that rewards with travel size products and different rewards after you’ve collected three stamps.
Arm yourself with knowledge on brands that are eco-friendly and have biodegrable product packaging. While you’re at it, check to see if your favourite brands offer a refillable program so you can just go in store and refill your products whenever you’re out of it.
Spread the word with your other beauty junkie friends so they too, are aware of the environmentally-friendly options.
