Come every Jul 29, the global beauty community celebrates a very unique occasion – National Lipstick Day. What? There’s a day for lipsticks? Yes, and National Lipstick Day serves to celebrate and commemorate this age-old makeup product that has a storied (and at times controversial) history throughout the centuries.
So, how did National Lipstick Day come about? Well, there’s no conclusive documentation on the World Wide Web to how this day came about. A popular theory states that this day was first celebrated by beauty influencers, bloggers, and brands. Nonetheless of this day’s history, we’re happy to have yet another reason to don a perfect red lippie.
Here are seven newly launched and classic lipsticks we’re celebrating today:
First up on our list is the newly launched SU:M37’s Losec Summa Elixir Golden Lipstick ($58) which consists of gold powder in the formula. Gold in the lipstick? Yup. The South Korean makeup and skincare brand believes that the presence of gold boosts metabolism, slows the ageing process, protects against UV rays, erases dark spots, brightens skin, and removes toxins from the body and skin.
Next up is another newly-launched lippie from our beloved (and very nostalgic) makeup brand, Etude’s Fixing Tint ($19.90) which comes in five different shades of rose, red, peach, and nudes. The key characteristic of this lip tint? It is mask proof. Yes, Etude claims that the colour locks in within one minute and stays on for six hours. We’ve found great reviews of this new lip tint on online forums, and it sure seems like it works!
Prefer a matte finish to your lipstick? You’ll enjoy this luxurious matte lipstick – Guerlain’s My Rouge KissKiss Tender Matte series ($55). This lipstick formula contains hyaluronic acid, shea butter, and rose petal extract, which gives you a smooth application that is velvety, lightweight, and non-drying while moisturising and soothing your lips.
Newly launched in Singapore in May this year, the vegan and cruelty-free Canadian beauty brand, BITE Beauty, launched the Power Move Soft Matte Lipstick ($40) this month in 20 shades of natural reds, oranges, browns, and nudes for everyday wear. The brand reportedly took three years to develop this creamy matte lipstick formula from superfoods and cocoa butter.
Perhaps one of the Charlotte Tilbury’s most classic and recognisable lipsticks, the Matte Revolution in Pillow Talk ($50) has gained a cult-like following of fans who love it for its:
- Beautiful and natural pink Pillow Talk shade that suits most skin types
- Matte finish that’s not drying
- Luxurious looking gold-tone packaging
However, there were reviewers who said that the colour doesn’t stay on for too long. Sounds like this lippie suits those of us who love to reapply our lipsticks throughout the day.
If you love K-dramas and K-beauty, here’s one for you: Ksisters’ Yulip Lipstick in a flaming chilli red aptly named Gochujang ($30). Yulip? What’s that? Yulip is a South Korean clean makeup brand with products made of natural and animal cruelty-free ingredients. In fact, according to Yulip, women eat up to 3kg of lipsticks in a lifetime – also why the brand thought it was necessary that women have access to vegan and safe lipstick formulas.
Finally, a wallet-friendly option from Sephora’s in-house brand, Sephora Collection. The highly-pigmented and long-lasting Cream Lip Stain ($20) comes in an impressive wide range of shades, non-drying formula packed with avocado oil, and a velvety finish. Basically, you get the entire package – high colour payoff, moisture, and creamy finish – on a budget.
