In a fast paced city like Singapore – where nine-to-five hours are often a luxury – it comes as no surprise that the stress of keeping up has led to hypertension becoming a fairly common problem in Singapore.

Hypertension, or high blood pressure, refers to when blood is pumped around the body at a higher-than-normal pressure. According to a 2019 article by the Ministry of Health, slightly less than one in four Singapore residents aged 30 to 69 years have hypertension, with more than one in two persons afflicted with the same condition in the 60 to 69 years age group.

Hypertension can lead to severe complications, such as heart disease, stroke, or even kidney failure. To keep your blood pressure in the healthy range – which should be lower than 120/80 mmHg – maintaining a healthy lifestyle is extremely important. This also includes your diet, which should comprise a mix of unsaturated fats and plenty of fibre from sources like fruits. The best part? There are heaps of delicious fruits that are good for your blood pressure. Here’s a list of the four most popular and common varieties.

According to researchers at Queen Margaret University in Edinburgh, pomegranate juice can help to lower blood pressure. While the 2011 study was funded by the Pomegreat drinks company, results had shown that majority of the participants saw a fall in their blood pressure after drinking 500ml of pomegranate juice daily. Pomegranate is packed with antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties, which not only helps to lower blood pressure, but also reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases.

For the body to function normally, electrolytes – such as potassium and sodium – are essential. However, consuming too much sodium can cause your blood pressure to rise, which can lead to cardiovascular diseases like stroke and heart disease.

Hence, it is important to maintain a balanced intake of both potassium and sodium. Potassium is found in fruits like bananas, which are mineral rich. Increasing your consumption of potassium is said to minimise the ill effects of sodium on your body as it helps to get rid of the excess sodium.

Based on a study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, berries contain flavonoids that can help to lower blood pressure. Participants who consumed the most strawberries and blueberries had a reduced risk of developing high blood pressure, as compared to those who ate the least amount of berries.

Tomatoes

Tomatoes are rich in lycopene and potassium, both of which help to lower your blood pressure. According to a study done by The University of Adelaide, consuming 25mg or more lycopene daily can help to lower your cholesterol levels, which lowers your risk of high blood pressure and prevents cardiovascular disease.
