Remember a time before COVID-19 when you would be alerted to the start of New York, Paris, or Milan fashion weeks when the influencers or celebrities that you follow on Instagram started posting street style images of themselves in the respective cities? The consumer fashion week experience has changed drastically. Without the hype of the street style crowd and images streaming down our social media feed, these once-prestigious fashion weeks have been able to pass us by silently.
So, what’s happening over on the other end of the world this fashion week? Right now, in October, the brands are showing their Spring/ Summer 2022 collections for womenswear. On the fashion runways, we’ve noticed a pretty drastic change in the beauty department.
Once upon a time, brands would opt for signature, trailblazing, and attention-grabbing makeup looks to complement their show concept and clothing designs.
However, in the Spring/Summer 2022 fashion week that’s just concluded this October, we saw majority of fashion brands drop that altogether. Instead, brands opted for minimal to no makeup looks that made the models look like they were bare faced and a little lethargic (like all of us).
No rosy blushes this season, no splashes of colour, no glitter, and no megawatt highlighters on the cheekbones.
The makeup presented on this season’s fashion runways has honestly and candidly captured the mood of the world we live in today – lethargic yet still struggling to keep it together by overcompensating with an exaggerated chilli red lipstick or a dramatic, out-of-shape black eyeliner.
In fact, the lack of makeup on the runways came as a stark contrast to the Kardashian-perfect makeup that’s been circulating on TikTok – perhaps a nice reminder to us how disassociated viral social media platforms such as TikTok may be from the real world that people truly have to grapple with.
Below, the four makeup trends we picked up from this month’s Spring/ Summer 2022 fashion runways:
