Often referred to as “Taiwan’s top model”, Lin Chi-ling has been captivating us with her beauty since she started her career in 2002. Since then, she has branched into acting, starring in films such as Red Cliff (2008) and Embarrasing Way (2019).
Lin also made headlines when she married Japanese actor-performer Akira in 2019 after being romantically linked to F4’s Jerry Yan previously. The multi-hyphenate, who currently resides in Japan with her husband, recently directed a commercial with support from Akira.
Here we’ve compiled some of Lin Chi-ling best beauty tips including her genius hack for getting rid of dark circles.
Because Lin Chi-ling has sensitive skin, she needs to pay special attention to the ingredients in her skincare. The point here is to be mindful of what skincare you use and make sure it is agreeable with what your skin needs, rather than blindly follow trends or recommendations.
Lin Chi-ling’s secret to dealing with dark eye circles and bags is to do a warm compress. First, dissolve a teaspoon of salt into warm water. Then soak a cotton pad and places it on the eye bags for about five to 10 minutes before removing and applying moisturising eye cream. She adds that a warm compress is best done at night before bed while a cold compress is best in the morning, the moment you wake up.
Hydration is of paramount importance for Lin Chi-ling. As such, she doesn’t hold back on the number of skincare products or steps needed to achieve that. In fact, she applies her essence and moisturiser twice to ensure that the skin is adequately hydrated. And if her skin is feeling particularly dry, she adds a few drops of facial oil to her moisturiser.
Instead of just slapping on skincare and calling it a day, Lin Chi-ling reportedly does a 10-step facial massage routine. Not only does this help skincare absorb better, but the massage is said to improve blood circulation and lymphatic drainage to remove toxins and reduce puffiness. The massage also acts as a gym workout for the face. Who wouldn’t want these benefits especially after looking at Lin Chi-ling’s V-shape face?
Ultraviolet radiation from the sun is one of the biggest causes of skin ageing. As such, Lin Chi-ling pays particular attention to sun protection. Whether she’s staying indoors or heading out, she is diligent about sunscreen application. To ensure she is properly protected from the sun’s harmful UV rays, she relies on sunglasses, hats and sun-protective clothing. In addition, Lin Chi-ling carries sunscreen with her so she can reapply throughout the day.
By now we know the importance of keeping our body hydrated with sufficient water if you want to get good skin. For Lin Chi-ling, she drinks two litres of water each day and mixes it up with healthy drinks such as lemon water, barley water, ginseng tea and honey citron tea. Varying the types of liquid you consume can make drinking water less of a chore. She also starts her morning by drinking a glass of warm water.
We know that exercise has many benefits to our health and our skin. Likewise, Lin Chi-ling takes time out of each day to get herself moving and sweating – her toned figure is her testament to her dedication and hard work. And if you can’t find time to go jogging, simple exercises that can be done at home or the office, such as chair exercises and planks, will suffice as well. She adds that you’ll see results if you put in the effort to exercise daily.
Lin Chi-ling takes her shower time very seriously. She often dedicates an hour or two by transforming her shower routine into a pampering at-home spa session where she would pay special attention to treating her hair, face and body. She will also take the time to exfoliate, from head to toe. Tl;dr self-care is important.
To keep her skin moisturised, Lin Chi-ling avoids sleeping in air-conditioned spaces, as much as possible. While that might be a tall order given Singapore’s hot, balmy weather, another tip she has is to sleep with a humidifier or place a wet towel nearby to maintain a certain level of humidity.
No matter how many negative things are happening in her life, Lin Chi-ling always resets herself and starts each day with a smile. She adds that by doing that, the body naturally produces a kind of positive energy that keeps her “heart” young. “While we may not keep our appearance young forever, we can definitely keep our youthful state of mind. This is what I always tell myself.”
