Move over, all you trendy short K-drama hairstyles of 2020. There’s a new and upcoming hairstyle trend from the West – the ’90s barrette vintage hairstyle is once again headed our way. However, this time, no accessories (excessive hair clips, anyone?) are required.
While hair trends come and go every season, the need for low-maintenance, easy hairstyles with maximum impact is a mainstay in the hairstyle history books. This latest hairdo is no different.
Let’s dive straight into our hairstyle of the day: the Fawcett Flip. What’s that? If you’re not familiar with the name, it’s okay. This hairstyle came from the ’70s, inspired by the 1976 television series, Charlie’s Angels‘ actress Farrah Fawcett (who played Jill Munroe in the show).
Didn’t know. Charlie’s Angels was actually a 1976 television show? Well, it’s time for you (and us) to start bingeing on this show and take inspiration from her flattering blowout hairstyle. Psst, Jennifer Lopez and Brie Larson recently showed off their Fawcett blowout on Instagram, too!
This oh-so-groovy way to style your tresses requires nothing more than a curler or hot brush, or a hair dryer and a round brush – plus a lot of head shaking.
Simply curl the entire perimeter of your hair dramatically away from your face with a large-barrel tong, or use a round brush and hair dryer to achieve the same effect.
Leave to cool, then shake your hair thoroughly. Once your curls are defying gravity, simply sprit with a healthy serving of hairspray and voila!
The look can be as extreme or natural as you’d like, with the only requirement being that the curls must face away from your face.
And while the classic Fawcett Flip has been tried and tested for years, the tend definitely caters to those who have shorter, disco-ready layers at the front or a long fringe as it certainly adds more bounce to your locks.
But trimming your tresses isn’t a necessity to get the look – the key is how you direct the hair back with your desired hot tool.
For those with longer layers wanting to “cheat” the more layered version of the flip, direct the hair on each side vertically away from the face, then curl the sections on the top of your head directly straight back.
You won’t need too much in your tool kit to master this style – just a little heat, hold and some time. Try:

- GHD Ceramic Vented Radial Brush – Size 3 ($51)
