Putting your best self forward requires intentional choices. This is especially so for busy mums – even if it means stepping outside your comfort zone and putting yourself first.

Mums often struggle with feelings of guilt when they take time away from their children to practice self-care. But, as the saying goes, you can’t pour from an empty cup. To best nurture your family, you need to frequently recharge your batteries and tend to your health, despite how busy your schedule may be.

Regularly practicing self-care can also be a teachable moment for your children. After all, self-care is just as essential for the rest of the family as it is for busy mums! By showing your kids that you take care of yourself, you’re modelling the importance of prioritising physical and mental wellness. And the earlier your little ones learn the importance of self-care, the more likely they are to maintain these good habits well into adulthood.

With the right self-care routine, you can feel healthy, look great and live a joyful life, all while juggling family and work. And by getting your kids in on the action, you can bond with them while teaching them how to maintain a healthy body and mind.

Check out this video on how to start your wellness journey at Unity then read on for six simple ways to design a balanced lifestyle for both you and your family, through self-care choices that feed the body, mind and spirit.

Care for your eyes

While it’s true that genetics play a part in eye conditions such as myopia, there’s a lot you can do to support your eye health – and to start your kids on healthy eye habits for life.

For starters, it’s key to keep your hands clean. The most common way that people catch colds is by rubbing their eyes while they have germs on their hands. If your eyes are itchy, try using eye drops instead.

If you work from home and use the computer often, you can adopt healthy screen habits for your children to follow. These include keeping your screen 20 to 24 inches away from your eyes, keeping the top of the screen slightly below eye level and adjusting the lighting to minimise screen glare.

We also tend to blink less when we stare at screens, which makes our eyes dusty, dry and itchy. Besides remembering to blink frequently, you can also remedy this with eye drops. Additionally, you should take a break from your screen every 20 minutes to focus on an object that’s 20 feet away for 20 seconds.

Overdue for an eye check-up? From now until 31 March 2022, you can get a free Plano Eye Check (worth $50) and a $30 FairPrice e-voucher (after completion of the eye check) when you spend a minimum of $40 nett on selected health supplement and personal care products at Unity, FairPrice Stores and Warehouse Club. Terms and conditions apply. Click here to find out more about the promotion

Plano is an eye-health tech start-up affiliated with the Singapore National Eye Centre, Singapore Eye Research Institute and National Health Innovation Centre, with the goal of educating people about digital eye-strain management and promoting solutions to improve eye health. You can find out more about the offer here.

US Clinicals StrongEye Softgels Bundle with VitaRealm Vitamin C Effervescent Tablets ($69 for 60s Softgels and 2 x 20s Tablets) offers a power-packed duo of supplements to boost both your eye health and overall immunity.

EyeMo Moist Eye Drops ($10.05 for 2 x 7.5ml) are a refreshing balm for your eyes. It’s specially formulated to replenish moisture in eyes that have become dry from extended computer use or exposure to air-conditioned surroundings.

US Clinicals StrongEye Kids ($29.52 for 60s) helps promote robust eye health for your children. It contains rich antioxidants, and can improve blood circulation to the eyes, relieve eye fatigue and protect the retina from oxidation damage and inflammation.

Get up and get moving

Regular exercise boosts your mood, energy levels and immunity. For a mix of fitness and fun, choose workouts that motivate and energise you: be it taking an outdoor yoga class, hiring a personal trainer, having a dance party with your kids or going for a bike ride.

Movement isn’t just a fun activity for you and the kids to do together, it also builds better bone health. Physical activity helps make muscles stronger, and improves coordination and balance in both children and adults – which makes it less likely that your kid may suffer a fall. Exercise also helps build bone mass for stronger bones.

Besides getting active, you can also support your bone health and immunity with a range of targeted supplements.

Vitamaxx UC-II Joint Triple-Strength Capsules ($34.90 for 30s) support joint flexibility and mobility by preventing and reducing damage caused by wear and tear. The clinically tested product protects joints from inflammation and degradation, and promotes the formation of new cartilage in affected areas.

21st Century Collasamine Sachets ($28.85 for 30s) offer relief for joint pain and cartilage renewal. The water-soluble powder contains collagen peptides, glucosamine, chondroitin and MSM, and comes in a delicious orange flavour with no fishy taste or smell.

VÖOST Mega B Complex Effervescent Tablets ($14.15 for 20s) boost energy production, relieve fatigue, support cognitive function and assist in the making of healthy red blood cells – all of which can help increase your overall immunity.

Feed your body well

It’s great for your kids to see you practising self-care when it comes to eating well, because you’re modelling healthy behaviour and teaching them long-lasting good food habits.

Need some simple ideas to make healthy eating the norm in your family? Incorporate plant-based alternatives, choose water over juice or sugary drinks and cook at home more often. You can also take a few minutes to plan your weekly supermarket trips, so that you’ll always have the necessary ingredients to make quick, easy and healthy meals.

A healthy gut is crucial to preserving immunity and well-being. To ensure that your digestive system – as well as that of your kids – is in tip-top shape, it’s important to include a diverse variety of foods in your diet. This should consist of plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, as well as legumes, beans and fermented items such as yogurt.

Additionally, you can boost your digestive health with probiotics.

Pro-Life Probio-Enzyme Vege-Capsules ($33 for 60s) are formulated with a comprehensive proprietary blend of digestive enzymes, probiotics and prebiotics. This combination supports healthy digestion and microbiome balance.

Neobiotics Immune Probiotic Multi-Strain Formula Capsules ($65.90 for 2 x 60s) are made with 14 strains of probiotics to help maintain a strong digestive system. The capsules are suitable for vegetarians, as well as those with a lactose- or gluten-free diet.

Stay connected with your partner – and your friends
image

Don’t let your busy schedule rob you of time with your friends. You may adore your kids, but sometimes it’s nice to catch up with adults and talk about something other than Baby Shark and homework schedules!

If weekly date nights with your partner aren’t realistic, schedule some time to connect on a regular basis. For instance, you can make the first Friday of each month date night, or schedule a one-morning-a-month coffee date without the kids in tow.

Grooming can even be a fun part of your date-night plans. Try giving each other a home spa with a facial mask or serum treatment, a back massage or a hair wash that incorporates a head massage.

RYO Hair Loss Expert Care Shampoo ($13.90 for 400ml) is suitable for those with oily, dry and sensitive scalp conditions. It’s formulated with potent ingredients including whole ginseng extract to help target the root causes of hair loss.

Plantur 39 Colour Brown Conditioner (150ml, check Unity stores for price) boosts the colour brilliance of brown hair with every wash, while working to cover emerging grey hairs and light roots. It also helps protect the scalp and promote hair growth.

OC Naturals Rejuvenating Body Wash ($8.90 for 725ml) is a natural, paraben-free and Australian-made product that contains 100% plant-based ingredients. The addition of certified-organic oils is sure to leave your skin feeling nourished and pampered.

Put healthcare on the calendar

You wouldn’t let your kids miss their annual check-ups – so don’t let your own health fall by the wayside either. When you’re a busy parent with a million things on the to-do list, it’s easy to ignore your own body’s signals.

But if the pandemic has taught us anything, it’s that health needs to be of the utmost priority – so make sure to schedule those annual check-ups, mammograms, skin exams, pap smears, flu shots and eye screenings for your peace of mind.

If you happen to fall sick with a non-emergency illness, you can use Unity’s Telemedicine Service to get speedy and convenient health advice from experts. The service offers online video consultations with a doctor, and can be accessed at selected Unity stores or online. You can then pick up your prescribed medication at a range of Unity stores island-wide.

Take time to focus on yourself
image

As a busy mum, it’s easy to lose yourself in the day-to-day routines of family life: taking the kids to school, laundry, preparing meals, overseeing homework, paying the bills… the list goes on.

The antidote? Engaging in self-care pursuits that nourish your soul. Be it going for a pottery class; pursuing hobbies such as singing, dancing or painting; or simply calling a friend for a chat, having some time to yourself can provide that all-important rejuvenation that your body and mind require.

When you have young kids, even a few minutes alone in the bathroom can be a rare luxury – so make it count with facial and body products that pamper you while they do their job. An uplifting scent or a luxurious texture can turn a simple skincare or shower routine into a special self-care time out.

Ah Yuan Wild Mugwort Repairing Cream (50g, check Unity stores for price) comes packed with natural ingredients such as mugwort herb extract, jojoba seed oil and calendula flower extract. Its antibacterial and wound-healing properties help repair damaged cells while soothing inflamed skin.

Paula’s Choice Clinical Discoloration Repair Serum (30ml for $75) is a potent formula that visibly fades brown and grey patches, and prevents new discolouration from forming with Tranexamic acid. It contains a special complex including bakuchiol and niacinamide, and is suitable for all skin types. Available from 18 March at selected Unity stores.

Senka Perfect Whip Collagen Facial Cleanser ($6.60 for 120g) is a firming and moisturising product that includes the brand’s signature silk cocoon essence. It helps rid the skin of impurities, combats day-to-day damage and strengthens the skin’s natural barrier.

Offers valid till 7 April, 2022. Available at select stores. While stocks last.
