Feeling hot and bothered by the recent heat wave? Don’t reach for an ice-cream… but load up on these cooling foods instead which can help refresh your body and mind.

1. Watermelon

If your body is constantly sweating a lot due to the stifling heat, then this fruit can help replenish lost fluids. Containing up to 95 per cent water content, it keeps you hydrated while vitamins A and C plus other nutrients provide nourishment.

2. Leafy Greens

Leafy vegetables not only contain water to help replenish the body’s fluids, but they are a great source of antioxidants and vitamins to help fend off sickness when temperatures soar. Plus they are easy on your digestive system so your body does not expend extra energy to digest them.

3. Peppers

Contrary to what many might think, eating spicy stuff can help your body cool down. As the heat goes through your body, you might start to sweat, but then this provides a cooling sensation which helps regulate your body temperature. If you are not a fan of spicy foods or chilli, try adding more peppers in your dishes.

High in water content plus diuretic properties to help the body flush out toxins, the humble cucumber is also refreshing as it’s crunchy and goes great with salads and many dishes. It’s also known to have some anti-inflammatory properties which help the body deal with heat rashes; place slices over affected areas to soothe skin.

The potassium contained in bananas eases your stomach for better digestion, and has a cooling effect on your body’s digestive system. Munch on one when the afternoon heat becomes unbearable, or have it as a banana split dessert on warm nights to cool down.
