10 Fashionable Films To Add To Your Movie Bucket List For 2022

From Vegas glitz to Parisian chic, Y2K cool to Regency-core, these new and upcoming releases are rated F for their major fashion chops

September 6, 2022

Remember Clueless, with Cher Horowitz’s larger than life personality… and wardrobe? The 1995 film is a cult classic that shaped pop culture and fuelled our ’90s style obsession and appetite for skirt suits, not least because of Cher’s impeccable style.

Indeed, the roles between cinema and fashion have always been enmeshed since way back when. In this spirit, we’ve rounded up some newly released and upcoming shows that, like Clueless, rock timeless trends and display stunning costume design that will thrill any fashion-spotting style fiend.

10 Fashionable Films To Add To Your Movie Bucket List For 2022
Elvis
custom

The OG King of Rock ‘n’ Roll returns in Baz Luhrmann’s latest musical biopic, Elvis. Austin Butler stars as the man himself, donning many legendary costumes, such as the skintight leather suit with his trademark Napoleon collar which was worn for a 1968 NBC special. Over 9,000 costumes were designed for this movie, with 90 for Elvis alone (look out for some custom Prada and Miu Miu in the show)! We can’t help but fall in love with the level of detail — and rhinestones.

Not Okay
custom

Zoey Deutsch looks a-okay in this satirical black comedy on the impact of social media. Unsurprisingly, the film’s wardrobe pays homage to the enduring Gen Z fashion trend, Y2K. It’s all in the details, from Deutsch’s ’90s blonde highlights that pop against her dark hair to TikTok-friendly fashion picks. Spot the Prada Re-edition shoulder bag, various Reformation pieces, and colourful butterfly clips. Psst, you can cop the chunky jewellery she wears — it’s a curated collab with BonBonWhims.

Not Okay is now streaming on Disney+

Persuasion
custom

Move over Bridgerton, there’s a new show in town serving us Regency-core. While we love watching Austen characters taking twists and turns on their journey to fall in love, we also adore the Romantic Regency wardrobe showcased in Persuasion. Taking inspiration from modern female icons like Patti Smith and Audrey Hepburn, costume designer Marianne Agertoft created many loose fitting, button up and collared silhouettes for protagonist Anne Elliot (Dakota Smith) to reflect her intellect and practicality. It’s a subtle but meaningful shift in tone, dare we say a creative liberty in the name of feminism.

Persuasion is now streaming on Netflix

Bodies Bodies Bodies
custom

Seven young and wealthy friends have a house party in a remote mansion during a hurricane. What could go wrong? Everything, it seems in this Euphoria meets Scream campy slasher flick which stars Pete Davidson and young Hollywood actresses such as Maria Bakalova and Chase Sui Wonders. There might be a killer in their midst, but these teens look like they’re ready for a night out: Sophie (Amandla Stenberg) mixes neon and plaid while Alice (Rachel Senott) dons glow stick accessories. Talk about looking good for any occasion.

Bodies Bodies Bodies premieres on August 12

Moonage Daydream
custom

Freak out in this upcoming documentary on David Bowie which is directed by Brett Morgan. It’s the first film to be authorised by the Bowie estate and promises plenty of unreleased footage and materials from Bowie’s private archives. This means more of Bowie’s signature eccentricity — floral dresses, pointed boots, dapper suits, electric makeup and more of everyone’s beloved gender-bending space oddity.

Moonage Daydream premieres on Sep 15

Don't Worry Darling
custom

With its star-studded cast of Harry Styles, Florence Pugh, Olivia Wilde, Chris Pine and Gemma Chan, we suppose the acting isn’t much to worry about. Set in an experimental community in the ’50s, this film is set to serve viewers with some suburban housewife-meets-Slim Aarons aesthetics. Floral printed dresses paired with pearl earrings and impressively coiffed hair spell perfection. While the community’s wardrobe, along with everything else, appears idyllic, there’s much more lying beneath the surface…

Don’t Worry Darling premieres on Sep 22

Blonde
custom

Marilyn Monroe is best known for being a classic Hollywood sex symbol, but beneath the glitz and glamour lies something more troubled and human. Led by Ana de Armas, who spent three and a half hours daily transforming into the blonde bombshell, Blonde reimagines the darker side of Monroe. Of course, it also re-creates some of Monroe’s most memorable looks, like her pink silk satin gown in Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend and her minimalist off-screen wardrobe.

Blonde premieres on Netflix on Sep 23

Mrs Harris Goes To Paris
custom

In the third film adaptation of Paul Gallico’s 1958 novel Flowers for Mrs. Harris, cleaning lady Ada Harris falls in love with her client’s haute couture Dior dress. She embarks on a mission to buy her own, changing the course of her and the fashion house’s journeys. Be wowed by the painstakingly reconstructed Dior gowns, which range from chic summer dresses to a pristine floor-length bridal gown, in this cinematic tribute to a fashion powerhouse.

Mrs Harris Goes to Paris premieres on Oct 6

Triangle of Sadness
custom

A fashion influencer couple are invited to attend a luxury yacht vacay with other members of the one per cent, where they promptly get stranded and chaos ensues. The opening scene of the trailer for this year’s Palme d’Or-winning film by Swedish director Ruben Ostlund has already drummed up some hype, with models putting on grumpy faces in a hilarious satire of the fashion industry. Yacht fashion – bikinis, slip dresses and nautical motifs – is a definite staple of this film, along with a healthy dose of social commentary. Put on your life vests and get ready for a fashionable disaster that will make you erupt in laughter faster than you can say, “Eat the rich!”

Triangle Of Sadness premieres in the United States on Oct 6. No word on its release in Singapore as of press time

HARI NEF AS CANDY DARLING
custom

While she may have passed in 1974, Candy Darling, one of the most iconic trans legends, is finally getting a biopic. The project remains unnamed and shrouded in mystery, but we do know that Hari Nef, trans superstar and fashion darling (seen above going through JW Anderson’s Fall/Winter 2022 collection), is set to portray, ehem, Darling herself. Expect plenty of Darling’s personal style, a unique blend of Old Hollywood and ’70s bohemian (think flowy dresses, furs, and printed scarves). We cannot think of a more fitting way to honour Andy Warhol’s muse.

Film title and release date to be confirmed
