If you liked watching Sister Act when it first hit the silver screen way back in the ’90s, then you’re going to adore Sister Act, the musical.
Arriving on our shores for the first time, Sister Act promises to be a family treat that will get everyone groovin’ and movin’ in the aisle. It combines various feel-good musical styles such as Motown, soul and funk, while retaining a story about love, friendship and staying true to yourself.
We took some time to watch Deloris and the gang tear up the stage at the MasterCard Theatres at Marina Bay Sands through 107 minutes of non-stop laughter, song and dance.
The musical runs from now to 28 May 2017, and tickets are available through sistic.com and marinabaysands.com.
Here are our top ten reasons why you should check it out!

Hailing from the US, the cast may be in Singapore for the first time, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t pros.
In fact, they’ve been nominated for a Tony award not one, not twice but five times!
On top of that, the musical also features original tunes penned by 8-time Oscar winner Alan Menken, and is produced by none other than the original sister, Whoopi Goldberg.
Part of the reason why we loved the musical is watching the MasterCard Theatre’s stage take on a variety of scenes through the transformative and immersive sets. One moment you’re in a disco dancing, the next moment you’re with the sisters in the cathedral!
Echoing Deloris’ disco diva dreams, expect to see the cast shimmy and shake in everything from the habits to swingy sequinned dresses.
Glitz and sparkle aside, we love the message that Sister Act tries to convey. It reminds the audience that they should stay true to themselves.
In a world so full of noise, it’s easy to lose sight of who you are. But as the characters in the musical show, the most important voice to listen to is your inner voice!
Part of the draw of the show is all the humour and clever wit that go along with the dancing and singing. Watch for side-splitting stage stealing one-liners from the cast, puns galore and – without any spoilers – an on-stage costume change that will prove fantastical to watch.
Every story will have a villain, and Sister Act is no different. But unlike the regular bad guys, the villains of the piece are a motley crew of singing, romancing and dancing guys.
With this much charm, it’s easy to see why the audience loved every moment they were on stage.
We all know the story behind the movie, but the musical gives audiences a refreshing take on the plot.
The heart of the story is still the same, but how Deloris gets there and works her way out of it gets a 2017 update so it doesn’t feel like you’re watching just another film-to-stage adaptation.
The story is set in a church, so you can expect a lot of powerhouse singers belting out gospel-inspired tunes.
That being said, it’s still fantastic to watch the cast tell their stories through the power of their vocals.
Also, keep a watch out for Sophie Kim, the first Asian actress to be cast in the role of Sister Mary Roberts.
While the musical is about friendship, you’ll see a romantic on-stage pairing as well. But unlike other productions, the romance here doesn’t detract from the story about friendship and sisterhood. It’s neither cloying nor overly mushy, but offers a sweet escape from the convent.
Of course, while the rest of the cast shines with their incredible singing and performance, Dené Hill certainly commands the stage. Dené anchors the musical as the lead character Deloris, and trust us when we say that she will croon her way into your adoration!
If you enjoyed the musical like we did, show the cast some love by getting up and dancing at their encore performance. Take it from us – they will appreciate the love!
