PSA: Bridgerton is officially coming back for season 2 on March 25, 2022!
In celebration of the anniversary of the hit series premiere, Netflix and Shondaland have decided to surprise fans with news that the second season of the show will make its debut early next year. But what will be the focus of the upcoming season?
If you’re looking to find out more about the second season of the hit period drama, including its cast, plot and release date, continue to read on.
Well, to put it short, fans of Lord Anthony Bridgerton — the eldest Bridgerton sibling and Viscount — will be in for a treat as it will focus on the romance story of his quest for love. Driven to uphold his family’s name, Anthony’s search for a debutante has proven to be quite the struggle, especially with his impossible standards.
He eventually meets Kate (Simone Ashley) and her younger sister Edwina (Charithra Chandran) Sharma arrive from India. When Anthony begins to court Edwina, Kate discovers the true nature of his intentions and decides to try to stop the union. However, Kate and Anthony’s continuous arguments only bring them closer together. On the flip side, the Featheringtons also must welcome the newest heir to their estate while Penelope (Nicola Coughlan) continues to navigate the ton whilst keeping her deepest secret from her loved ones.
The exciting news was first revealed on Bridgerton’s official Instagram account of which a post was released on January 22nd, featuring cuts of memorable moments from the show’s first instalment. The caption also stated that fans of Bridgerton should “prepare for another social season”.
Following the post, the latest issue of Lady Whistledown’s society paper was released, which begins: “The ton are abuzz with the latest gossip, and so it is my honour to impart to you: Bridgerton shall officially return for a second season. I do hope you have stored a bottle of ratafia for this most delightful occasion.” It also stated that production will also begin in the Spring of 2021.
For the unacquainted, the period rom-com is based on the popular Bridgerton book series where it follows the English high society families in hosting formal gatherings and their perennial quest to marry off their daughters through the lens of Lady Whistledown (voiced by Julie Andrews). In short, it’s somewhat a dramatic version of your favourite Gossip Girl series, with witty dialogues and characters dressed in 19th-century ballgowns and stylish suits — promising an intriguing and scandalous plot that’ll have you hooked in no time.
And if the plot isn’t enough for you to get you hooked, the cast of Bridgerton might just sound like your cup of tea. In fact, Cole Sprouse agrees in his recent interview on The Drew Barrymore Show where he declared the Bridgerton cast the most beautiful actors he’s ever seen.
Case in point: since the show will take after the second novel of the book series, you can expect to see the return of Jonathan Bailey who stars as Anthony Bridgerton, as well as Phoebe Dynevor who plays Daphne Bridgerton.
Other cast members who are expected to return in season 2 include Shelley Conn (Mary Sharma), Calam Lynch (Theo Sharpe) and Rupert Young (Jack). Some of the other cast members returning to the screen include Adjoa Andoh (Lady Danbury), Lorraine Ashbourne (Mrs. Varley), Harriet Cains (Philipa Featherington), Bessie Carter (Prudence Featherington), Ruth Gemmell (Violet Bridgerton), Florence Hunt (Hyacinth Bridgerton), Martins Imhangbe (Will Mondrich), Claudia Jessie (Eloise Bridgerton), Luke Newton (Colin Bridgerton), Golda Rosheuvel (Queen Charlotte), Luke Thompson (Benedict Bridgerton), Will Tilston (Gregory Bridgerton), Polly Walker (Portia Featherington) and Julie Andrews as the voice of Lady Whistledown.
While there are no official statements regarding the number of episodes that will be released in season 2, it’s expected to comprise of eight episodes just as season one did.
