Homegrown Superstar JJ Lin Reveals The “5 Cs” He Cannot Live Without

Demand for tickets to homegrown singer JJ Lin’s concert remains strong even after two shows were added. Here are some things to know about the Singaporean singer.

September 30, 2019

Humble, talented and charming. These three words perfectly sum up homegrown singer-songwriter JJ Lin (or Lim Jun Jie), whose upcoming concert in Singapore on December 21 sold out in one-and-a-half hours. The 38-year-old Taiwan-based star has since added a second date to the concert at the National Stadium, which is part of his milestone JJ Lin Sanctuary 2.0 World Tour.

JJ’s popularity is no doubt surging, thanks to his soaring pitch-perfect vocals, skillful finesse at rearranging Mandopop songs and incredible stage presence. Thankfully, the down-to-earth former Saint Andrew’s Junior College student has not let his fame get to his head — he has been spotted having hawker centre meals at Adam Road Food Centre and playing DotA 2 at a LAN shop.

We sat down with JJ when he flew home last Thursday (Sep 26) for the launch of Osim’s new massage chairs, uDivine V, of which he’s the new global ambassador. (According to Osim, JJ is the homegrown brand’s first Singaporean global ambassador, and we couldn’t be more proud!)

At the interview, he revealed the five Cs that are most important to him, modelled after the five that the uDivine V offers (comfort, care, capability, contentment and colours). Find out JJ’s five Cs below:

Contribution
custom

“I would like to be relevant in this world, in my field. I think hard about how I can contribute more to society, to the music community, and to our Asian culture. That’s been on my mind every single day,” he shares.

And it’s not always about making big, fancy contributions. The star reveals that he finds it very meaningful when he can put a smile on someone’s face, whether it’s a fan, friend or family.

“If you can help them, even with a small gesture, if you can make them happy, that’s a big reward.” JJ says that when he takes a photo with fans and sees the smiles of happiness on their faces, “seeing them so happy also makes me feel happy”. Aww!

Companionship
custom

“It matters to me more and more nowadays. I mean, companionship comes in different ways, different styles, different types; friendship, family and love,” says JJ. Speaking of love… is he planning to settle down anytime soon?

When we asked him what’s one thing he’s always wanted to do but hasn’t, the singer gave a rather cryptic answer: “To live out my song”. He laughs before explaining, “My latest song [The Story Of Us] is about love, and the completeness and wholeness of a love story. That’s something that I’ve always wanted to experience and reach. And I will strive on to… anticipate!”

So is there a lady in his life? “The first sentence [of the song] has been sung,” says JJ, before singing the line itself, “The story begins with one person.”

“Yes, I’m at that part now. I hope to experience the rest of my song soon.” Well, long story short: JJ’s definitely on the lookout for love!

Coffee
custom

As he travels frequently for work, sleep deprivation, jet lag and fatigue are simply part of the job, and JJ reveals that he relies a lot on coffee to stay awake. “I just came back from LA (Los Angeles), two days ago – super jet lagged. I didn’t sleep at all last night,” he admits. The self-professed coffee addict continues to say, “I’m an addict, but I’m also passionate about the [coffee] culture, and started a label on my own.”

Yes, just around the corner from his studio in Taiwan is his blue-themed takeaway coffee joint, Miracle Coffee. It serves hand-dripped coffee, with coffee beans that are sourced from different parts of the world and changed every month.

Charity
custom

“Charity is something that I treasure a lot, and I think it’s important for me as a person, as a human being – it’s giving back to society and to have more awareness for people and situations around you,” says JJ, who wants to involve himself in more charity work.

More specifically, he shares that he wants to focus more on supporting the younger generation, especially through education and schools. “Children are the future, right?” says the big-hearted star, who is also a sponsor to several children.

Computers
custom

“I’m a tech geek,” he professes, saying that he relies on computers for gaming (he enjoys esports) as well as for making music. But it’s not just the literal computer that’s important to him. “It also represents the tech world, which  I think it’s important in bringing our craft forward, and all these things together link back to contribution.”

Homegrown Superstar JJ Lin Reveals The "5 Cs" He Cannot Live Without
1. His childhood dreams included...
custom

…becoming an athlete, a police officer and a pilot. JJ attributes these dreams to his “vivid imagination”, thanks to the countless movies he’d watched when he was young. For instance, he wanted to become a boxer after watching Rocky.

“The only difference is I got older and learned how to think and put these little dreams into action and fulfill them step by step. That is the process of chasing your dreams,” he tells us at the Osim event.

“You must believe that they will happen, that you will achieve, that you will reach it. On top of that, you have to put in enough effort and determination to fulfill them.”

2. If he wasn't a musician, he would probably be...

… a journalist! More specifically, a photojournalist. At our interview with the star, he reveals that photojournalism is his “secret dream”, that he wishes to be able to go out into the world and record it in photographs. The shutterbug reveals that he wants to capture moments and share them with the world, although he finds that dream unrealistic and hard to achieve. Well, never say never, JJ!

3. His musical hero is Justin Timberlake
custom

JJ is often seen schmoozing with celebrities, both Asian and Western. From Janet Jackson to Jay Leno, Jacky Cheung, Karen Mok and Nicholas Tse, he has rubbed shoulders with some of the biggest names in the industry, but the one celebrity he really looks up to is Justin Timberlake.

“He’s my hero. Musical hero. I’ve always been a fan, and the fact that I bumped into him the last trip I was in LA – we exchanged a few words, and that was it;  I had to control myself,” he gushes. “I couldn’t be too persistent or aggressive or I would scare him. We were in a very high class restaurant so I had to be composed. Bu neng lao kui.“

4. To him, the most valuable things in life are intangible
custom

“Health and happiness are the most valuable things in life, and they impact each other – if you have health, it’s easier for you to be happy,” he says. “To be a better person, to chase your dreams, you must know how to balance your life so that you can get the rest you need before you set off again.”

“Personally, I’m always on the move, flying – I rarely stay in one place for long, so I don’t get the best or the most sleep. I probably sleep less than most people … so it’s about being able to raise my quality of sleep in that short amount of time,” says the Osim global brand ambassador, who dishes that he the two most used massage functions he uses from the uDivine V are the sleeping and sports programmes.

5. His biggest milestone so far is...

… his current world tour, the JJ Lin Sanctuary 2.0 World Tour. “I am extremely grateful for when I am today and right now, especially as we are doing our world tour concert. Because we’re doing bigger and bigger shows, more and more shows, for every show, I’m just really grateful.”

While he’s better known by his stage name, JJ’s English name is actually Wayne. The JJ in his stage name are actually the initials for his Chinese name, Jun Jie.

7. He started out writing songs for others
custom

Just musicians Bruno Mars, SIA and many more, JJ started his music career by writing songs for others before becoming a star on his own. While interning at local Mandarin music label Ocean Butterflies, JJ wrote songs for Taiwanese artists A-Mei and Harlem Yu.

8. He's launched several businesses
custom

Inspired by his love for pop art and street fashion, JJ launched “Still Moving UnDer Gun firE”, in short, SMG or Smudge. According to its website, it’s a lifestyle label that recognises the stressful moments and volatile nature of life and how one literally feels that he or she is “under gunfire” in life’s daily grind. It sells mostly military-inspired pieces such as t-shirts, jackets, bags and caps, and stores can be found in Taiwan and China.

JJ also founded music production company JFJ Productions in 2007, and in 2017 launched a cutting-edge studio JFJ Sanctuary in Taipei, as part of a joint venture with UnUsUaL Entertainment. It boasts a multi-functional recording studio combined with a multi-media film studio, and has LED walls and an interactive LED floor installation that allows virtual reality and all-rounded 360 degree, customisable graphic effects and visuals.

Then there’s his coffee joint, Miracle Coffee, of course. Talented much?

9. He's a family man
custom

JJ’s mummy frequently appears on his social media feed, and they are often seen doing regular family stuff, such as going for tea, travelling and having karaoke sessions. The filial son has also invited his mum, dad and elder brother onstage to sing with him during his concerts. How sweet.

10. He's got a soft spot for kids
custom

Although JJ isn’t married (yet), it’s pretty clear he loves the kiddos and is perfectly comfortable handling tiny humans. The busy man still manages to find time to hang with his relatives’ and friends’ babies, and shows them off whenever he can. Our ovaries are exploding.

11. He's BFFs with Jay Chou
custom

Singaporeans went into a tizzy in September 2018 when JJ and fellow Mandopop heavyweight Jay Chou were spotted going around Singapore while purportedly filming for a variety show.

They were seen exploring Sim Lim Square and fooling around with each other’s wax figure at Madame Tussauds, before going for a karaoke session and singing a duet at Voice Art Karaoke Lounge at Bishan, which is opened by JJ’s parents. At one point during the song, the cheeky pair even formed a heart shape with their arms.

Besides this ‘tour’, the two also display their friendship by regularly “liking” each other’s posts and appearing in photos together, such as this February post which shows them just hangin’ in Los Angeles with cups of coffee. Love.

12. He's pretty spontaneous
custom

A Taiwanese busker’s day was made when JJ jumped in for an impromptu duet after he heard a familiar tune. Posting a video (see below) on his Facebook in November 2015, he said he was out shopping when he heard the busker singing his song, Jiang Nan (2004). Impressed, he decided to join in, much to the excitement and surprise of the fangirls nearby. He sang the second verse, before harmonising with the busker during the charming performance. After that, he declared it a “success”, quipping: “Let’s continue shopping.” What a champ.

13. He's crazy hardworking
custom

In August 2018, JJ staged four straight gigs at the Singapore Indoor Stadium for his JJ Lin Sanctuary World Tour, all of which were sold out within hours. It was a feat eclipsed only by Hong Kong’s Heavenly King Jacky Cheung, who pulled off five nights at the same venue in 2011.

And fans were fully entertained during the three-hour-long performance, with JJ entering with a flourish, suspended in mid-air while cocooned in white and spinning head over heels slowly. He then transformed into a white butterfly, complete with white “wings”, as he launched into the opening hit ballad A Thousand Years Later. He danced, played the piano and guitar, and even jammed with guest star, veteran Canadian songwriter and music producer David Foster, with David playing the piano as he belted out a soulful All By Myself. Impressive.
