10 Celebrities Who Surprised Us With An Appearance in The NDP 2019 Video

Have you seen the 2019 NDP video yet? If you have, you might have been surprised to see some familier faces. Here are 10 celebs we were surprised to see.

Have you seen the 2019 NDP video yet? Did the cameos of some celebrities surprise you?

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you would have known that recently, the National Day Parade 2019 committee released this year’s video for our National Day theme song. Singaporeans eagerly took to social media to watch the video for our nation’s 54th birthday.

The video, which is titled ‘Our Singapore’,  featured 27 artists. Most of whom would have been no stranger to any of us.

However, there are certainly some big names who surprised us with their appearances. Here are ten celebrities we did not expect to see in the National Day 219 video.

1. Dick Lee

The first surprising celebrity we saw in the NDP video was singer-songwriter Dick Lee. Dick Lee is the creative director for NDP 2019. Dick is also the man who came up with Singapore’s favourite National Day song, Home.

It was exciting to see the brain behind the entire concept in the video alongside the other singers.

2. Kit Chan

Home-grown singer Kit Chan is a familiar face in the NDP scene. In fact, she was the person who sang Home, the song composed by Dick Lee.

It was blissfully nostalgic to see this familiar face once again in a NDP theme song.

3. Rahimah Rahim

Rahimah Rahim was a Singaporean singer in the 1950s. She released her first album when she was 17 in 1972. Since then, she has released a total of 12 albums. However, following a pilgrimage to Mecca in 1989, Rahimah decided to retire from singing.

While she has performed on select special occasions, she has no plans to come out of retirement just yet. It was lovely to see her singing proudly in the video.

4. Taufik Batisah

Taufik Batisah is one of the most familiar names in Singapore. In 2004, Taufik was crowned the winner of the first ever Singapore Idol. He has since gone on to produce five studio albums has has participated in events such as Chingay and Korea’s Independence Day.

Seeing him in this year’s NDP video felt like going back to 2004!

5. The Sam Willows

The Sam Willows are no stranger to the National Day Parade. In fact, the group performed their rendition of Home at the 2015 National Day Parade.

What was surprising about their appearance was the fact that shortly after the video was released, on May 27 the Sam Willows announced that they would be taking a break.

While the band has reassured fans that they are not disbanding, they will cease performing indefinitely to focus on their own individual projects.

6. Tracy Huang

Tracy Huang is a Taiwanese-born singer whose career and fame rose in Singapore in the 1970s. When she moved to Singapore in the 1970s, she signed with a local label, EMI Singapore. She sings in English in Mandarin and has produced numerous studio albums that have gone on to win awards.

Tracy herself has made a huge name for herself. In fact, she is recognised and celebrated in many Asian countries such as Malaysia, Hong Kong and Singapore.

7. Ramli Sarip

Ramli Sarip, or Papa Rock as he is sometimes referred to, plays a pretty big role in the NDP video. In fact, his deep voice is the part where the video transitions from black and white to coloured.

Ramli is considered to be one of the founders of Singapore’s rock scene. In 1986, Ramli was the front man and lead singer of a Singaporean band called Sweet Charity. Sweet Charity was a heavy metal-rock group.

In 1986, Ramli moved on to a solo career. Since then, he has produced 12 studio albums and continues to be incredibly famous and talented.

As a heavy metal-rock singer, it was interesting seeing Ramli harmonising and melding with the other voices in the video.

8. Stephanie Sun

Stephanie Sun is a Singaporean singer-songwriter who put out her first studio album, Yan Zi, in 2000. Since then, Stephanie has gone on to produce 12 studio albums which rocketed her to fame. In fact, she has sold over 30 million records to date and has achieved popularity in many Asian countries.

Stephanie has also written and sang National Day favourites such as “We Will Get There” in 2002 and “One United People” in 2003.

9. Joseph Schooling

Joseph Schooling is famously known for winning a gold medal in the 100m butterfly at the 2016 Olympics. This was Singapore’s first Olympic medal in Swimming.

Since then, Joseph has gone on to participate in many more swimming competitions, model for advertisements and apparently, now he even sings!

It was a pleasant surprise to see Singapore’s Olympian singing our national theme song proudly alongside other singers.

10. Jacintha Abisheganaden

Jacintha Abisheganaden may be an unfamiliar face to younger audiences but older folk may remember that Jacintha first came into prominence in 1976 after winning a local talent content, Talentime with her singing. From there, Jacintha worked her way up the local entertainment industry.

Jacintha has since released multiple studio albums and has acted in many musicals and even movies.

Seeing her in the video was a real throwback.
