Nepo babies is a big trendy term in the entertainment industry right now. It seems the Internet can’t get enough of the offspring of the glamorous and good-looking A-listers, especially in Hollywood.
Search “nepo baby” on TikTok and you’ll see why. There are plenty of videos explaining the term and showing us many examples. Kaia Gerber, daughter of supermodel Cindy Crawford is an example of a nepo baby. So are Willow and Jaden Smith (children of Will Smith), Lily-Rose Depp (daughter of Johnny Depp), and Brooklyn Beckham (son of David and Victoria Beckham).

The big debate these days is whether being a nepo baby gives these offspring an unfair leg up in what is normally a cutthroat industry. This idea has made them quite a target, even though many are successful in their own right (and also argue quite rightfully that they can’t control what family they are born into).
Here in Singapore we’ve got our very own nepo babies who have also found success, whether this has been by following in their parents footsteps or venturing into new industries on their own. Here we look at some of these successful second generation stars and what they’re up to.
Her parents, Xiang Yun and Edmund Chen, are no strangers to those of us who grew up in the ’80s and ’90s. The showbiz veterans are one of the most famous local celebrity couples, and they became household names after starring in iconic local dramas such as The Awakening and Patrol.
The couple tied the knot in 1989, and they have a daughter and son, Yixin and Yixi. 22-year-old Yixin followed the footsteps of her parents and chose acting as her career.
In an interview with Her World, she shared: “Acting has always been very present in my life. Mingling and interacting with people who are so passionate about the arts really inspired me, and I fell in love with it over the years. Performing has always been something that makes me happy.”
Yixin is slated to appear in the second season of drama series Titoudao.
Tay Ying made her on-screen debut in the 2017 Channel 8 drama titled While We Are Young. Two years later, Tay Ying underwent a three-month course at Shanghai-based Motown Acting School, going through intensive studying and training for almost 16 hours a day and six days per week.
Last year, the actress announced on her Instagram that she would join Mediacorp as an artiste. Her parents, Hong Huifang and Zheng Geping have been familiar names in the local entertainment scene, starring in drama series such as The Price of Peace and Like Father Like Daughter.
The former most recently starred in Ajooma and won the Best Actress award at the 8th Asian World Film Festival. The latter left Mediacorp in early February as he needed to “quiet down and empty his mind” and “focus on the next path”, he told 8days.
Singer-songwriter Iman debuted in 2021 with her solo English single named Timeframe. Before this, she kept her dream of becoming a singer a secret, so much so that even her parents – former model Wendy Jacobs and football icon Fandi Ahmad – didn’t know.
Before releasing her single, Iman took on modelling gigs and when she was just 14 years old, took part in The New Paper New Face contest. A regular at fashion parties and product launches, the 22-year-old is also well-loved by international brands including Prada, Tiffany & Co. and YSL Beauté.
It feels like only yesterday when we saw Eleanor fronting a magazine cover with her mum Quan Yi Fong. The 23-year-old actress had her first break into the entertainment scene back in 2015 when she scored a role in a viral Chinese Apple commercial.
She rose to fame for her role in The Big Boss in 2017, and since then, she’s starred in numerous television series and films such as My Love, Enlighten Me and The Enchanting Phantom.
Her mum, Yi Fong is largely based in Singapore, hosting variety, awards and talk shows. Some of the award-winning host’s work include Hear U Out, Yifong and Eleanor Kitchen.
Not all celebrities’ children follow the footsteps of their parents. Case in point: Ethel whose dad is homegrown film-maker Jack Neo. The entrepreneur and mum-of-two is the brain behind Chu Collagen and Éclat by Oui – both of which she founded with her hubby Peter Lau.
Together, the couple went on to win the SOE Start-Up Award at the Spirit of Enterprise (SOE) Awards last year. Ethel’s success didn’t come without any setbacks, however.
In an interview with Mothership, Ethel shared that she was a “late bloomer,” falling behind her peers when she was in primary school. Later, as an adult, she preserved through three failed businesses before setting up Éclat by Oui and Chu Collagen.
