We applaud you if you stayed up until the wee hours to watch the Apple Key Notes for the new iPhone 8 and iPhone X, but for the rest of us, this is what you’ve missed.
The iPhone 8 and 8 Plus feature a gorgeous aluminum and glass design. Apple boasts of a durable glass back which uses an intensive seven-layer colour process to match the hue and opacity of the aluminum bezel perfectly. It’s also water and dust resistant.
The new iPhone 8 and 8 Plus come in three finishes – Silver, Space Grey and Gold, dropping out Rose Gold completely from its repertoire. We do notice that the new gold tone seems a little warmer, almost like it’s a mixture between the old gold option and the rose gold option. It’s still a pretty colour nonetheless.
The iPhone 8 and 8 Plus camera gets an upgrade to 12 megapixels and comes with a larger and faster image sensor, new colour filter and deeper pixels. Basically, if you thought the iPhone 7 Plus takes great photos, you ain’t seen nothing yet.
The iPhone X on the other hand, also features a 12-megapixel back camera but the magic lies in the 7-megapixel front camera. It comes loaded with facial recognition and Portrait mode which was previously available only on the back camera for the iPhone 7 Plus.
Since we were touching on the cameras, we’ll go more into the new Portrait Lighting that comes with Portrait Mode. Available only on the iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone X, this mode features five types of enhanced lighting like Natural Light, Studio Light, Contour Light, Stage Light, Stage Light Mono to take your portraits to the next level.
Again, since the iPhone X also features Portrait Mode on the front camera, this means you can now take incredible selfies even when the lighting is bad.
Finally, Apple has introduced wireless charging with a new AirPower Mat. You’ll still have to hang on to your Lightning cables till next year though, the AirPower Mat will only be launched in 2018. The larger AirPower Mat allows you to charge up to three devices at once, including the new Apple Watch Series 3 and AirPods.
That’s right, the new iPhone X has done away with the Home button to feature a full 5.8 inch glass with Super Retina display and is an absolute beauty. The devil is in the detail, with the glass following the curvature of the phone down to the rounded corners.
Unlike the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus which comes in three colour variations, the iPhone X will only come in Silver and Space Grey
Without the Home button (which means no fingerprint recognition), the iPhone X uses Face ID to unlock your phone. Backed with the TrueDepth technology on the camera system, the iPhone X camera is able to map and detect faces accurately. There’s no tricking this camera with photos or masks as the iPhone X is designed to only unlock when you look at it.
The iPhone 8 is priced at S$1,148 and S$1,388 for the 64 GB and 256 GB respectively, while the iPhone 8 Plus is priced at S$1,308 for the 64 GB and S$1,548 for the 256 GB. Both the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus are available for pre-orders and officially released on 22nd September.
The iPhone X will be priced at S$1,648 and S$1,888 for the 64 GB and 256 GB respectively and will be available on November 8.
