The brilliant Frances McDormand puts in one of her best onscreen performances as Mildred Hayes, a mother seeking justice for the murder of her daughter. The role has already landed the actress a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Drama Motion Picture, on top of the recent BAFTA and Screen Actors Guild Awards. It’s no wonder there are lots of Oscar buzz of her winning as well.
Awarded the best film for this year’s Golden Globe Awards, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri is lauded for its intense, emotional and darkly humorous story that explores many themes, including racism, murder, justice, rape, domestic abuse and police brutality. The film is also expected to be a frontrunner for the upcoming Oscars with nominations in various categories.
Nominated and awarded the Best Actor in a Supporting Role in Any Motion Picture, Sam Rockwell plays a racist cop with such fierce conviction that you will hate him and then love him towards the end. Many film critics predicted that the role will also land him an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor.
As much as its a story-driven film, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri is also character-driven with a very sharp script. From the bitter-sweet moments featuring the charismatic police chief William Willoughby (above, played by actor Woody Harrelson) to supporting roles like advertising boss Red Welby (played brilliantly by Caleb Landry Jones), each character is given moments to shine in the film.
Did we mention that our favourite dwarf from Game of Thrones is in this film as well? Peter Dinklage plays a supporting role as the wannabe love interest of Mildred. He might not have been nominated for any awards in this role, but the scenes he’s in are hilarious, which just adds to the charm of the movie further. Thumbs up for Peter’s performance!
