Anybody who knows the 10 year challenge from last year would remember Mariah Carey’s amazing response to the trend. True enough, the goddess doesn’t age, and some might even argue she ages in reverse, remaining as bright and beautiful as her five octave vocal range.
There exists, though, another controversy regarding the star’s age – whether she’s born in or 1969 or 1970 – so undecided even Wikipedia states so.
But whether it’s her 50th, 51st or 12th (as she says so herself) this year, one known fact for sure is that it’s definitely Mariah’s birthday today (March 27). Being the absolute icon she is, the mum-of-two doesn’t even call them birthdays – “I don’t count years, but I definitely rebuke them – I have anniversaries, not birthdays, because I celebrate life, darling.”
This year, the songstress is celebrating her birthday by taking part in a celebrity fund-raising “living room” gig hosted by Sir Elton John, which sees other top musicians like Billie Eilish and Alicia Keys joining forces on March 29 to entertain fans from their homes during this time of social distancing and isolation. The hour-long concert will pay tribute to US healthcare workers, where fans can donate to charities to support these frontline workers.
So to mark our favourite diva’s milestone birthday (assuming it IS her 50th), who better to ask than our very own SPH Radio DJs? Find out their answers below!

10 Things You Didn’t Know About Mariah Carey
“My favourite MC song has got to be ‘Honey’. Just hearing the first few notes of the song puts me in a bit of a party mood because it’s got a great beat and is a little cheeky! The song is from her album ‘Butterfly’, and the CD was one of my prized purchases from my trip to the US in 1997. In fact, it came close to being stolen because it was packed away in an overweight hand carry that had to be checked in at the last minute. I had lost several items from this bag but was so glad that the ‘Butterfly’ CD was still there upon returning to Singapore!
What I also love about her music is that there’s always a Mariah Carey song for every season of life – falling in love, breaking up, tapping on your inner hero, saying farewell, she’s been there with us through it all! So, ‘Thank You’ for the music and Happy 50th Mariah Carey!”

“I will choose ‘Without You’. Well, I used to like it. Until it was ruined forever by this brilliantly awful viral YouTube clip from Bulgarian Pop Idol of a woman screeching KEN LEEEEEE!”
Here’s the original, untainted version for your listening pleasure:
“The ONE song I love from Mariah is ‘All I Want for Christmas’ – it’s cheeky, sexy, romantic, fun and it’s about my favourite time of the year! No matter my allegiance – a happy 50th to Mariah!”
Ah, a classic. It’s not Christmas yet, but we could all use some good vibes right now:
“Mariah Carey’s vocal runs and trills are pure exaltation. There is a quality about her singing that isn’t obnoxious or showy. While I love her faster songs, my ultimate favourite is ‘Vision of Love’. I knew she was going to be something big. I also wanted her Maggie Mee hair.”

Manisha also chose Mariah’s debut single, “Vision of Love”. “My cousin and I made our first ever MTV mix tape with this as our number one track. Even today I don’t think I’ve ever heard a track that’s hit number one in the chart with that much height and breadth. It was an all encompassing number with an almost spiritual presence. Even today, I have to listen to it on noise cancelling headphones to savour the truly superb vocals!”
When asked what her favourite song was on Bravo’s Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen in 2018, Mariah named her two favourite songs to perform as “All I Want for Christmas Is You” and “Hero”, which she acknowledged as strange coming from her.
Mariah explained, after describing them as the “poppiest” ones she could say, that she chose “Hero” because “it’s usually the last song I do, if I do it, and everybody’s holding up their lighters or their phones.”
A diva she may be, but Mariah Carey can be sentimental when she wants to be.

Happy birthday, Mariah!
